I just received the ILLINOIS SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY 2011 29TH EDITION compiled by Richard Gottschall and edited by Sue Boonlayangoor. What I have noticed in the latest edition is there are more "Emeritus" and "Retired" members. I'm glad to see our ALT Secretary Yousuf is still actively culturing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. However, there are also new members in the directory. It was predicted by healthcare watchers in the early 2000s that most lab techs will be retiring by 2010 and hospitals and clinical labs will in turn be hiring new graduates from medical technology and allied health sciences.
I am not sure but can only guess if anyone is hiring with the gloomy economy and 9.2 % job unemployment! I remember from 1989 until 1991 there was a freeze in our salary as lab workers due to "low census" in sick in-patients and many hospitals were closing left and right. I said to myself, self, I'm working in a Catholic not-for-profit hospital, managed by a religious order, how about making it a contribution to charity? I finally got an increase of 2-3% three years later. Last week I heard on the WLS AM 890 radio talkshow of Don Wade & Roma that the Obama Administration gave the White House staff a 16% pay increase. Whoa! How shameful when the nation is on the edge of economic bankruptcy because of mismanagement, faulty budgetary and fiscal policies by the Obama Administration and Congress. Spreading and sharing Obama money to socialist causes are not the answers. What we need is belt tightening and spending cuts.
