JUNE 10, 2014   AN AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE WAS IN INTERNATIONAL UNDERWATERS, JUST OFF THE COAST OF SAMAR, WHEN ONE SUBMARINER HAD AN ACUTE APPENDICITIS.  The submarine commander asked the help of the Secretary of the Philippine Navy and the Aussie was brought to the Doctors Hospital in Tacloban, Leyte and then to Manila.  The Aussie was doing fine and the Philippines was "inoperably" happy to help one of its allies.

News Potpourri: January - May 2013

Overseas Filipino Workers who sent money remittance home grew by 8.4% to $1.9 billion in January from $1.7 billion a year earlier.  Remittances largely originated from the US (38.9%), Canada (11%), Saudi Arabia (7.6%), UK (5.3%), UAE (4.7%), Singapore (3.9%), and Japan (3.8%).

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has given illegal foreign workers, including 20,000 Filipinos (total of 1.5 million Filipino workers), a three-month grace period to legalize their status.  Some 200,000 people, mostly Asians, have been expelled from the oil-rich kingdom who has 8 million foreign workers, mostly with very low-paid jobs.

Show-business personality Kris Aquino, 42, the youngest sister of Pres. Noynoy Aquino, is 2011 number 1 taxpayer on the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).  She paid P49.87 million, followed by Sunpower Philippine VP Gregory Deane Reichow (P38.2 million) and Philippine ambassador to UN Lauro Liboon Baja Jr (P34.36).  None of the Filipino tycoons were among the Top 10 taxpayers: Henry Sy, Henry Sy Sr and Lucio Tan.

Two Filipinos made this year's TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World: Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, a pediatric allergist and immunologist from the University of Massachusetts and Philippine President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino.  Dr. Luzuriaga's team included AIDS researchers Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatrician at the University of Mississippi and Dr. Deborah Persaud, a virologist at John Hopkins Children's Center.  Dr. Luzuriaga has been on the forefront of pediatric HIV/AIDS research - patient oriented research focused on mother-to-child transmission of HIV.  They were also honored at the ceremony held at the Time Warner on Columbus Circle last April 23.

Anti-Political Dynasty Bill: The Philippines is without doubt the "world capital of political dynasties."  There are 178 active dynasties.  According to Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, some have ruled for 8 years, some for 20 years and some for a period of 30 years.  Some familiar family names out of 98 names: Cojuangco-Aquino, Crisologo, Lacson, Macapagal, Mitra, Recto, Romualdez/Lopez, Roxas, Singson, Sumulong, and Tanada.

Manny Pacquiao, world boxing champ and congressman, is returning to the ring this September.  Pacquiao lost his belt last June 9, 2012 when he was KO'd by Floyd Mayweather in six rounds.  Many Filipinos think  he lost the fight because he became a "Born-Again Christian."  Born-Again Christians never believed in the Virgin Mary and throw her statues as garbage.  Pacquiao no longer wants to fight  in the US because of high taxes.  IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander is the front runner among his possible opponents.  The fight is more likely to be held in Dubai for there is more money there.

Dubai carrier will fly to Clark International Airport, Pampanga, effective October 1st.  The Emirates has been operating flights to Manila since 1990.

The Musee du Quai in Paris opened an art exhibit dubbed "Philippines: Archipei des Echanges" featuring four national treasures from the Philippines: Oton Death Mask; Palawan Zoomorphic Ear Pendant flower; fragment of ear pendant with ring and quadrangular body; and the Maitum Anthropomorphic burial jar.  Vice President Jejomar Binay opened the largest exhibition, more than 300 works of art focusing on pre-colonial Philippines, in the last 20 years in France.

Four US Navy officers were relieved of their duties for the grounding of USS Guardian at the Tubbataba Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Sulu Sea, last January 17.  Initial investigation of USPF said the ship's commanding officer, the executive officer and navigator, the assistant navigator, and the officer on deck failed to follow standard navigating procedure.  On March 30, the USS Guardian was finally removed from the reef at a very high cost from the US government.  An earlier estimates show around 4,000 sq m of the protected coral reef were damaged.  RP government asked the United States to pay P58 million in compensation for the damage caused by the salvage/warship.

THE PHILIPPINES MOVES FORWARD http://vimeo.com/56190703
Producer/Director/Writer: Francisco "Kit" Reyes

In this latest video, the earth moves with the Philippines.  You bet! She has its own and very strong national identity even with 300 years of Spanish rule and 50 years under the Americans. The country of 7,100 islands, with a current population of 97 million (103,775,002 by 2014), is a "live museum of democracy." It is experiencing political and economic resurgence tempered with business prudence.  Forbes Magazine praised the Philippines as "the friendliest country in Asia." 23 min.

May I add, my favorite TV game show JEOPARDY! hosted by the handsome debonair Alex Trebek always have an answer ( contestant answers with a question) about the Philippines.  I have always wondered if a Filipino-American works in the show.

Pinoy Twins.... Filipinos are happy to
learn two-year-old conjoined twins Carl and Clarence Aguirre have shown no brain
damage after their separation and all vital signs are fine.  They are
very active and their doctor said they should be walking by
Christmas. Their mother, Arlene, who looks like Catherine Zeta-Jones said,
"Everybody knows them now." The twins who left Montefiore Medical Center in
Bronx last August 30 for Blythedale Children's Hospital in Valhalla
for physical  and speech therapy were delighted to be back at
Montefiore after being away for 10 days.  Watching the boys, Dr.
Robert Marion of Montefiore said, "It is a miracle.  It's the first time
twins like this have survived neurologically intact.  It's like a fairy
tale, where a mother searches for someone who can grant her wish."

Overseas Filipino Workers....The total
number of OFW rose 9.2% to 569,877 from 521,818 which led to a robust growth in
dollar remittances reaching $4.7 billion in 7 months from January to July this
year.  Countries such as Hongkong, Japan, Singapore, Italy, US, UK, Saudi
Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) continue to be the major sources of the
remittances.  The Bangko Sentral ng
Pilipinas (BSP) or Central Bank of the Philippines is expecting a
slowdown in dollar remittances as international banks have implemented
Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF) regulations to
follow the global flow of terrorist funds.  The continuing war with
militants in the Middle East also prevented the OFWs from going out of their
place of employment to transact with remittance centers.  This would then
provide incentives for OFWs to remit their earnings through underground money
changers which are not captured by officials.

Not Yet Time.... The ban on Iraq
deployment of Filipino workers stays according to Foreign Affairs Secretary
Alberto Romulo.  There are 4,200 Filipino reconstruction workers in various
camps in Iraq and being protected and monitored by Philippine authorities.
In a committee hearing in the House of Representatives in the Philippine
Congress, he was asked to divulge the status of the country's relationship with
the United States and Coalition members.  Sec. Romulo admitted that while
there was disagreement during the Angelo De La Cruz kidnapping hostage crises,
the US-led coalition did not retaliate in any way and agreed to 'move on.'
In a Social Weather Stations survey conducted from August 5 to 22, 67% of
respondents approved the pull out of Philippine contingent in Iraq to save the
life of the Filipino hostage.  Majority of Filipinos (78%) said good
relations with the US are very/somewhat important for economic development and
73% said it is very/somewhat important for protecting the Philippines from
international terrorism.  Also in the survey:

Foreign Investments.... The surge in
investments by foreigners is a good sign that the country is on the way to
economic recovery and progress.  The domestic product has a mid-year growth
of 6.35% - the highest in 16 years.  In the first 6 months, 650,000 jobs
have been created.  President Arroyo's goal is to create 6 to 10 million
jobs until 2010.  The stock market is very much alive and enjoyed a
52-month year high as foreign investors have been encouraged by economic reforms
implemented by the Arroyo government.  Good economy translates to more
jobs.  High employment growth is due to an increase in number of call
centers, cellphone usage and poll-related activities.  Other factors are
real estate, rentals, business, hotels and restaurants, construction, health and
social work, transport, storage and communications, wholesale and retail
trade.

The Philippine Debts.... Data from the
Bureau of Treasury (BOT) show that the national government hit the 3.53 trillion
pesos at the end of June.  Foreign debt rose by 19.3% to 1.7 trillion pesos
from 1.427 trillion pesos a year ago.  The rise can be partly due to
depreciation of the peso which lost over 2 pesos in value against the dollar
since June 2003 to June 2004.  The finance department also tapped more
direct foreign loans and issued more foreign denominates securities, bloating
the foreign debt.  The current exchange rate is 56 pesos to
$1.

Chocolate Deal.... Affordable
medicines such as anti-asthma, anti-diabetes, anti-hypertension and antibiotics
would soon be available to the Philippine public at half the price.  But
not without controversy hurled by critics against the president of Philippine
International Trading Corp. (PITC) on a "chocolate deal" entered by Duty
Free Philippines (DFP) with a British Virgin Islands-based company.

One-China Policy.... The Philippines
rejected Taiwan's appeal to become a member of the United Nations stressing its
one-China policy.  President Gloria Arroyo has just made clear the
country's one-China policy during her 3-day state visit to China.  It's
another repeatedly foiled attempt by Wu Hsin-hsing, head of Taipei Economic
Cultural Office in Manila that the Philippines recognize Taiwan as a state and
help it gain membership in the United Nations.

Anything But Arroyo.... Just like the
Bush-Gore election debacle of 2000, the opposition candidates Poe & Legarda
believed they were cheated in the May election.  Get over it, you
people!

  1. Coalition of the Coerced and the
    Bribed....
Here's proof that the Philippines, once a willing US
Coalition Member on the War on Terror is not.  This is how extreme
liberal presidential nominee Senator John Kerry (D-MA) define and keep
denigrating US coalition members fighting in Iraq - as "Coalition of of the
coerced and the bribed."  The Philippine government had to withdraw its
puny 50 troops last August in exchange to prevent the beheading of hostage
truck driver Angelo de la Cruz by his militant captors.  There was also an
unverified news that Malaysia paid the militants $1 million in behalf of the
Philippine government.  The decision by President Arroyo to withdraw was
heavily criticized by Australian Prime Minister John Howard, a staunch ally of
the United States.  He was just re-elected yesterday in a landslide victory
because of strong economy and his unflinching support on the war in
Iraq.  The United States government was equally disappointed with Arroyo's
decision and her government sees future retaliation for the
    pullout:

US plan to deport 300,000 undocumented Filipinos
    currently living in the US.
Downgrading of the country's credit rating.
Freezing of the Filipino war veterans bill by the US
    Congress.
The grant of military, agricultural and economic
    aid.
The return of the Balangiga bells - taken
away by US soldiers during World War II.
President Arroyo had considered the implications and
had been standing down on the comments on criticism so as not to exacerbate the
situation.  One Filipino senator said, "We can justify the pullout to the
US by citing that we have the biggest exposure of OFWs in the Middle East,
particularly in Saudi Arabia where we have one million Filipinos there.  We
can very well argue that we are protecting people in our decision to pullout and
that we cannot go against the Iraqis because of this." He further said, "...We
cannot live in a vacuum as the US remains to be a super power."  Malacanang
Palace (The White House of the Philippines) is confident Philippine-US relations
would bounce back and continue to remain strong.  Alberto del Rosario, the
Philippine ambassador to the US is due for replacement but there is no word yet
    on a successor.

Let Bygones be Bygones....The US is a
benevolent nation.  An agricultural trade between the US and
Philippines was recently established - the first in Asia.  If
Filipino-Americans will unanimously vote in drove for President George W. Bush
this coming November 2nd election and re-elected, he'll probably persuade more
Republicans in the US Congress to support the Filipino war veterans
    bill.

    Oy! Toyota....The Philippines is

    Relations....
    Investments are surging from foreign
investors and created some 40,000 new jobs according to the Department of Trade
and Industry (DTI).  It is a good sign the Philippines is on its way to
economic recovery and progress.  The stock market is very much alive and
the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) had a 6.4 percent growth - the highest in 16
years.  In the first six months, 650,000 jobs have been created for the
Filipino people.  Through sustained investments inflow, President Arroyo's
job creation agenda will definitely be realized in 6 years.

Too Sexy For This Job....There are 7.8
million Filipinos working abroad.  About 3.3 million Pinays are at risk to
international sex syndicates.  These women are undocumented workers and
working abroad in countries like Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, Japan and Dubai
with illegal papers.  They were recruited supposedly as sales people,
waitresses and entertainers  but end up in sex dens, bars and
brothels.  The United Nations Office on Drug and Crime considered Thailand
and the Philippines as major hubs for human trafficking.  The Philippines
is a source, transit and destination country for trafficking of young women and
children to Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong, Macau, Thailand, Australia, the
Middle East, United Kingdom, United States and other countries of the European
Union.  According to a U.S. government report, an estimated 225,000 women
and children were victims in Southeast Asia alone in 2003.  Human
trafficking is an international organized crime and crackdown against these sex
syndicates need international cooperation.  President Arroyo created the
Council of law enforcement agencies and signed the Anti-Trafficking of Persons
Act in May 2003.  The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) also got involved
and rescued two Pinays from forced prostitution in Brunei.

    Dangerous
    Liaison....Family, friends and
neighbors of U.N. worker Angelito Nayan in Las Pinas, Rizal are praying
everyday for his release in Afghanistan.  He was kidnapped in broad
daylight in the center of Kabul with 2 women co-workers last October 31st,
Sunday.  They were on their way to monitor and help in the new
democratic election.  In Iraq, Robert Tarongoy was kidnapped November 3rd,
Wednesday together with an American and a Nepalese.  Overseas Filipino
Workers (OFW) are at great risk from unknown predators and must exercise
complete protection by being on alert all the time.

    AFP Scandal....Armed Forces of the
Philippines Major-General Carlos Garcia owns a condo in New York, 2 houses in
Ohio and many bank accounts in the Philippines and United States.  He's
being investigated how with his menial salary as a soldier acquired millions of
    dollars.

  3. Dear ALTPRES:

We enjoy opening and reading your "Manila Envelope."  It's very informative and one way to know what's going on in the motherland.  We were watching the Philippine TV news yesterday.  It looks like there's still an angry feeling at the Arroyo Administration by the United States for the withdrawal of the 50 Filipino troops in Iraq.  The support of the Japanese and the South Koreans have been impressive and brave.  The Philippines is a disappointment, don't you think?

Maria "JOMA" Sison, founder of the CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines)
movement has a pending application for political asylum in the Netherlands where
he has been living since 1987.  Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo told the
Dutch government that it is safe to send the Filipino communist rebel home and
is free to join the many other former rebels who have decided to change the
political process through peaceful means.  The United States and other
Western governments included him in the list of terrorist groups.  JOMA

he may face threats or torture.

music and dance at a foreign educational institution as a requirement for

  6. Signed, Sealed and Delivered
    from THE PHILIPPINES!

    In Malacanang Palace, President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo signed the Executive Order No. 420 - National Identification System - which requires state agencies and
government-controlled corporations to harmonize their identification
system.  The Arroyo administration believes it will help in its fight
against terrorism.  It will also work hard to protect the information of
    citizens from identity theft.

According to World Bank, the Philippine economy hit a double-digit growth and rising.
This is due to an increase overseas worker remittances totaling $8.5 billion in
2004, up 11.3 percent from 2003, rapid growth of exports to China and strong
sales of semiconductor electronics.  However, growth is likely to slow down
in 2005 due to high cost of oil and low agriculture output due to typhoons last
    year.

In an address to joint session of Members
of Congress, including special guests former First Lady Imelda Marcos and former
Fidel Ramos -  Chinese President Hu Jintao agreed with President Arroyo when she rightfully
pointed out that it's the dawn of the "golden age" of Philippine-China relations.  He urged to turn
the disputed South China Sea into a "sea of friendship and cooperation."
That Asia "is our common home whose prosperity bears on our common destiny." Hu
and Arroyo witnessed the signing of 14 investment agreements worth a total of
$1.1 billion, the biggest a $950 million Baosteel group and Jinchuan Nonferrous
Metals Corp. to rehabilitate the Nonoc Nickel plant in Surigao City.
President Arroyo expects trade between them to grow from $13 billion to $30
billion in the next 5 years.  The Philippine trade with China since it
became a market economy  has been growing at a red-hot pace of 55
percent over the last 3 years enjoying a surplus of almost $5
    billion.

for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for what?  For
such nonsense as calling the Commissioner of Election to which she
apologized for doing (the tapes were taken through illegal wiretapping).
Even some members of Congress admitted to doing so.   And who cares
about the "jueteng" nonsense?! Everyone is playing it.  Why, even my mother
used to play it.  (Sorry 'Nay).  Militant protestors, political
oppositions and plain no-gooders are crying out loud for her to
resign.  A graduate in economics at Georgetown University and former

lead the country to prosperity and stability.   In the current
political arena no one is equal to her ability as a confident leader - not
has-been illiterate actors like former President Joseph Estrada and her former
dead presidential opponent Fernando Poe, Jr.   You Filipinos
should get over the past election.  It's already done and over with.

  11. Another problem of Filipinos is they are so easily influenced, imitating American demonstrators.  Moreover, politicians like to grandstand and are not loyal to their own party.  Last July 4th, our American Independence Day, some Filipinos even threw stones at the US Embassy in Manila.  Crazy!

  12.     This is very disturbing and upsetting about my fellow Filipinos.
The first group of OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers), 85 of them, arrived from Saudi Arabia.  They are hard-working domestic helpers so far away from home leaving their wives, husbands and children behind.  But their Saudi employers were mean and did not give them time to rest and had to work around the clock.  The second group of 90 OFWs will arrive in a few weeks.
I often wonder how the OFWs can take it with so much difference in tradition, food, culture and religion.  Being a servant does not mean you have to be stripped of all human rights and be treated so cruelly.
Money remittances coming from OFWs contribute to the dire economy of the Philippines.

  13. An environmental disaster! Toxic spills by an Australian mining company in operation for just about a year in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines, suspected and blamed for many dead fish, sharks and one sperm whale.  Some people had blisters and sores on their bodies.  What is the Philippine government do about it?

  14. The Philippine govt. should review the contract, file a lawsuit and fine the Australian mining company for safety violations.

  15. Mother Nature does not rest.  After 2 weeks of
torrential rain, mudslides buried alive possibly 1,800 people in Guinsaugon,
Leyte in southeastern Philippines.  Pres. Gloria Macapagal -Arroyo
said in a broadcast "help is on the way."  Two US naval ships, 17
helicopters and 1,000 American troops are helping in the rescue efforts.
The historical province of Leyte is where the greatest American hero Gen.
Douglas MacArthur landed to save the Philippines during WWII and the hometown
province of former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos.

A bomb blast in a karaoke bar injured 20 Filipinos
Friday in Muslim territory of Jolo in southern Philippines.

Brian Viloria, Fil-American Flyweight Boxing Champion
of the World is going to defend his title at the world class boxing stage at the
magical Aladdin Hotel & Casino Sunday, February 19.  Juan Antonio
Aguirre of Mexico is the contender on that corner.  Luck be the lady
tomorrow night for Brian whose father is a great Ilocano.  Mabuhay and
    Pinoy!

  17. Fil-American Flyweight champion of the World Brian
Viloria was an honored guest by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at
Malacanang Presidential Palace.  The palace chefs baked a cake with a
    design of his championship belt.

"Ate" Gloria is one tough leader.  She survived a
failed coup planned by rouge soldiers in the military who were in cahoots
with the New People's Army, a Communist group.  She declared a state of
national emergency and a lot of the citizenry liked it saying, "mabuti at
    tahimik" ( it's good it's peaceful).  Politically, she's constantly
fighting the barrage and attacks by her arch-critics - self-serving
political opponents, former accidental Pres. Cory Aquino and successor Fidel
Ramos, some leftist UP professors, has-been actresses and actors, the political
bitch Loren Legarda, idiotic religious leaders and discontented
liberal press.  Economically, Filipino businessmen are 100 percent behind
her and have great confidence in her ability to guide the country to economic
progress.  Many Filipinos, especially the star-struck bakyang
bayan (poor folks), would have preferred her political opponent, a
famous actor who did not live long after the presidential election anyway.
Until now these folks are crying the election was stolen by PGMA.
Filipinos abroad are amazed by the narrow-mindedness of these people proving
once again there's a very thin line between intelligence and stupidity.
But then, what do you expect?  Let's hope and pray PGMA will
overcome her enemies and will carry on until the year 2010.

Last week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 5 OFWs (Overseas
Filipino Workers) and their Indian driver, were mistaken by Saudi Police as
terrorists and their car was riddled with bullets.  They were on their way
to work in the early hours of the morning.  Two Filipinos died of their
wounds and the others are in the hospital with serious
    injuries.

  18. Manama, Bahrain: A pleasure cruise capsized Thursday without warning with 150 passengers on board.  The US military helped in the recovery.  There were 63 survivors - among them 7 Filipinos who survived and 3 Filipinos dead.  Some are part of musical entertainment and 2 Filipino crews were still missing as of Friday, March 31.

  20. I wonder where the Australian submarine is going?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Answering my self, the Royal Australian Navy submarines (500 submariners) conduct extensive surveillance operations throughout South East Asia.
