Commander Obama - America's Superhero

COMMANDER OBAMA: AMERICA'S NEW SUPERHERO

America has a long fascination with superheroes. Nowhere in the world were superheroes abound and multiply. For the first time in the history of America's superheroes, who are mostly whites be it known, a biracial superhero by the name of Commander-in-Chief Obama (aka Barack Hussein Obama or Commander Obama for short) rose up from the deep bowels of Windy City Chicago but now living in the Situation Room of the White House - his fortress of solitude - when he's not out campaigning and begging for money to pay for his many expensive black and initialed "CO" velvet capes and super-duper capers . To boot, none of the other popular superheroes could claim of being a Nobel Laureate from Norway. Commander Obama's success targets of Muslim villains - Somalia's pirates, Osama bin Laden, Al-Alwachi, and others in his covert hit list. Among his exalted predecessors who are forever young in the pages of comic books:

Superman "The Man of Steel" (aka Clark Kent) was the oldest, 79-year old - created in 1932. He has a new movie coming out in 2012.

Batman (aka Bruce Wayne) first rode his impressive Batmobile in Gotham City, missing a cellphone, in 1939. Yes, his sidekick Robin was riding with him.

The Green Lantern first saw green in 1940 and just made a film debut in the spring or summer of this year. Little did he know he would be the Patron Saint of wacko environmentalists, of all green things, including Kermit - a muppet boyfriend of the voluptuous Miss Piggy.

Captain America was created in 1941 to honor American soldiers of World War II. He also made his first movie debut in the cinema multiplex.

Spiderman made his first web in 1962 and caught many successes in the box-office a few years ago.

The Incredible Hulk came into being in 1962, also. His TV series was very popular in the 70s.

Iron Man and the X-Men first appeared in 1963. The last time I saw rich boy Iron Man was in 2008 ?, he was acting in a film on location in Afghanistan, and survived fighting with robots.

These cartoon superheroes - they all do the fighting by themselves alone, regardless of help or no help from the military. The spectacular triumphs of CO belong only to him but none to the Navy Seals, the US Forces and NATO. When you're the new superhero of the 21st Century, all the glories and accolades are yours and yours alone!

Papaya

@ Kuya Bernie

I love papaya, one of my favorite fruits.  Not over-ripe, though.  I'll eat a lot of papaya when I go to the Texas-Mexico border.  Other favorites are avocado, oranges and guavas!

Papaya
No need to cry about scarcity of blueberries, strawberries, etc in SINGAPORE . We have our wonderful payayas, pineapples and bananas, and durians and mangoes are affordable.

Papaya was the only studied food found to halt breast cancer

Scientists studied 14 plant foods commonly consumed in Mexico to determine their ability to halt breast cancer cell growth. These included avocado, black sapote, guava, mango, prickly pear cactus (nopal), pineapple, grapes, tomato, and papaya. They also evaluated beta-carotene, total plant phenolics, and gallic acid contents and antioxidant capacity. They found that only papaya had a significant effect on stopping breast cancer cell growth. (International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, May)
Papaya is a store-house of cancer fighting lycopene

The intense orangey-pink color of papaya means it is chock full of cancer fighting carotenoids. Not only beta carotene, but lycopene is found in abundance. The construction of lycopene makes it highly reactive toward oxygen and free radicals.

Scientists at the University of Illinois think this anti-oxidant activity contributes to its effectiveness as a cancer fighting agent. Epidemiological studies have indicated an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk. They showed that oral lycopene is highly bioavailable, accumulates in prostate tissue, and is localized in the nucleus of prostate epithelial cells.
In addition to antioxidant activity, other experiments have indicated that lycopene induces cancer cell death, anti-metastatic activity, and the up-regulation of protective enzymes. Phase I and II studies have established the safety of lycopene supplementation. (Cancer Letter, October 8, 2008)

Prostate cancer was the subject of a study in Australia that looked at 130 prostate cancer patients and 274 hospitalized controls
. The scientists found that men who consumed the most lycopene-rich fruits and vegetables such as papaya were 82% less likely to have prostate cancer. In this study, green tea also exerted a powerful anti-cancer effect. When lycopene-rich foods were consumed with green tea, the combination was even more effective, an outcome the researchers credited to their synergy. ( Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2007)

Isothiocyanates found in papaya restore the cell cycle to eliminate cancer

Organo-sulfur compounds called isothiocyanates are found in papaya. In animal experiments, isothiocyanates protected against cancers of the breast, lung, colon pancreas, and prostate, as well as leukemia, and they have the potential to prevent cancer in humans. Isothiocyanates have shown themselves capable of inhibiting both the formation and development of cancer cells through multiple pathways and mechanisms. (International Journal of Oncology), October, 2008)

Researchers in Japan clarified the mechanisms of action in a type of isothiocyanate found in papaya known as BITC, that underlies the relationship between cell cycle regulation and appropriate cell death. When cancerous cells die on schedule, they are no longer a problem. The researchers established that BITC exerted cancer cell killing effects that were greater in the proliferating cells than in the quiescent cells. Cancer cells that are proliferating are much more dangerous than cancer cells that are in a state of dormancy. (Forum of Nutrition, 2009)
Enzymes from papaya digest proteins including those that protect tumors

The fruit and other parts of the papaya tree, also known as the paw paw tree, contain papain and chymopapain, powerful proteolytic enzymes that facilitate chemical reactions in the body. They promote digestion by helping to break down proteins from food into amino acids that can be recombined to produce protein useable by humans. Proteolytic enzymes protect the body from inflammation and help heal burns. They do a good job of digesting unwanted scar tissue both on the skin and under its surface.
Research has shown that the physical and mental health of people is highly dependent on their ability to produce proteins they can use effectively. However, as people age, they produce less of the enzymes needed to effectively digest proteins from food and free needed amino acids. They are left with excessive amounts of undigested protein which can lead to overgrowth of unwanted bacteria in the intestinal tract, and a lack of available amino acids.

Eating papaya after a meal promotes digestion, and helps prevent bloating, gas production, and indigestion.
It is quite helpful after antibiotic use to replenish friendly intestinal bacteria that were the casualties in the war against the unwanted bacteria. When the intestinal tract is well populated with friendly bacteria, the immune system is strengthened, and can better protect against flu and cancer.

Being a proteolytic enzyme, papain is able to destroy intestinal parasites, which are composed mostly of protein. To rid the body of intestinal parasites, half a cup of papaya juice can be alternated each hour for twelve consecutive hours with the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice.
Papaya contains fibrin, another useful compound not readily found in the plant kingdom. Fibrin reduces the risk of blood clots and improves the quality of blood cells, optimizing the ability of blood to flow through the circulatory system. Fibrin is also important in preventing stokes. Proteolytic enzymes containing fibrin are a good idea for long plane rides to minimize the potential of blood clots in the legs. People who sit at a desk all day might want to use proteolytic enzymes too. Proteolytic enzymes are able to digest and destroy the defense shields of viruses, tumors, allergens, yeasts, and various forms of fungus. Once the shield is destroyed, tumors and invading organisms are extremely vulnerable and easily taken care of by the immune system. Undigested proteins can penetrate the gut and wind up in the bloodstream where they are treated by the immune system as invaders. If too many undigested proteins are floating around, the immune system becomes overburdened and unable to attend to the other tasks it was meant to do. Proteolytic enzymes can digest these rogue proteins, freeing up the immune system. Let's ensure a slice of papaya every day in our diet.Papaya juice will be great.

One of my favorite fruits is the papaya.  It's grown in tropical countries and the picture here was taken in a yard in the hot region of Texas.  The fruit originated from Central America.  Papaya is eaten raw at breakfast and it can be made into pickles.  It can also be eaten ripe and as a main ingredient in fruit salads, pies and sherbets.  I, myself, like it half-ripe, cut into bite-size, add salt and vinegar.  The papaya seeds grow readily.  It grows on a giant plant which looks like a small palm tree.  The fruit is round to oblong somewhat weighing 10 to 12 pounds.  The color varies: it's green when raw and yellow to dark-orange when ripe.  Many black seeds the size of peas are attached to the walls of the cavity.  The fruit is mildly sweet, with a musky taste.  The papaya has many values:  it's the source of the enzyme papain that helps in the digestion of food. It is used for a cure for dyspepsia  (indigestion) and similar ailments, to tenderize tough meats in cooking food without giving the eater a headache as in MSG (monosodium glutamate).

Windy City Chicago

October 20, 2011
How windy is it yesterday? It must be 50 - 60 mph!
It's so windy...
I looked out in the Labyrinth Garden this morning and saw the Virgin Mary leaning on one side. I went out right away and put her to her place.

It's so windy...

The pot of mums in my front door was blown away to the sidewalk.

Bounce

Good to know!

U.S. Postal  service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of  Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets  away.

Use them all the time when playing  baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really  works. The insects just veer around  you.

All this time you've just been  putting Bounce in the dryer!

1. It will chase ants  away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels  mice.

2. Spread sheets around  foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it  keeps mice from entering your  vehicle.

3. It takes the odour out  of books and photo albums that don't get opened too  often.

4. It repels mosquitoes.  Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during  mosquito  season.

5. Eliminate static  electricity from your television (or computer)  screen.

6. Since Bounce is  designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen  with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from  resettling..

7. Dissolve soap scum  from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of  Bounce.

8. To freshen the air in  your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang  in the closet.

9. Put Bounce sheet in  vacuum cleaner.

10. Prevent thread from  tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before  beginning to  sew.

11. Prevent musty  suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage  before storing.

12. To freshen the air in  your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front  seat.

13. Clean baked-on foods  from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit  overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently  weakens the bond between the food and the  pan..

14. Eliminate odours in  wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the  wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair.  Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract  all the loose hairs.

16. Eliminate static  electricity from Venetian blinds.. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of  Bounce to prevent dust from  resettling.

17. Wipe up sawdust from  drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect  sawdust like a tack  cloth.

18. Eliminate odours in  dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of  a laundry bag or  hamper.

19. Deodorize shoes or  sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers  overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce  sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees  away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in  your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will  keep them smelling  fresh.

22. Wet a Bounce sheet,  hose down your car, and wipe love bugs off easily with the wet  Bounce.

Quick, bounce this on within  the next 5 minutes! Nothing will happen if you don't, but your  friends will be glad to hear these  hints!

Ships Ahoy, Sailor Boy!

The sailor boys of USS Henley (DD-762) had their very first reunion at the Holiday Inn Hotel in San Antonio, Texas on October 12, 2011. Remembering and reminiscing the good old days with old buddies were the highlights of the evening. I bet Big Bro Napoleon told of his days at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the fall of 1962 when Destroyer USS Henley joined the other fleets in quarantining the island. The ship was sold on June 24, 1974 and broken up for scrap. But memories linger on and the spirit of its enduring valor lives on.

______________________________________________

I Sailor Boy First US Navy Ship: USS Roberts (DE-749)

A Cannon-class destroyer escort during World War II. It earned one battle star. It was nicknamed after Arthur John Roberts, Jr. who served in the Battle of Tassafaronga, Guadalcanal. It was reassigned as a training ship. It was the first ship of sailor boy. Until October 1961, Roberts continued her reserved training duty. Then, with the Berlin Crisis, the Selected Reserve was called to active duty and Roberts was assigned to the newly formed escort squadron CortRon based at Norfolk, Virginia. On August 1, 1962 after the released of the reserve crew, she returned to Reserve Destroyer Squadron 34 and resumed Naval Reserve training. Her fate - she was sunk as target in November, 1971.

II Sailor Boy Second US Navy Ship: USS Henley (DD-762)

Permission to come aboard, Sir! [See USS Henley Reunion]

III Sailor Boy Third US Navy Ship: USS William M. Wood (DD-716)

A Gearing-class destroyer during World War II. It earned one battle star. It was nicknamed after Navy Surgeon-General William M. Wood (1809-1880). On June 18, 1965, after post-refresher availability at Norfolk, the destoyer embarked upon another tour of duty in the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet and continued alternating such deployment with normal duty out of Norfolk with the Atlantic Fleet. In May and June 1968, she participated in the unsuccessful search for the nuclear attack submarine Scorpion reported missing on May 27. Her fate - she was sunk as target off Puerto Rico during ReadEx 1-83 in March 1983.

IV Sailor Boy Fourth US Navy Ship: USS Tolovana (A0-64)

A Cimarron-class fleet oiler. It was named after a river in Alaska. It earned one battle star in World War II; two battle stars in the Korean War; twelve battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation for service of Vietnam War. Among her naval operations - World War II Pacific Theatre; supporting atomic testing at Bikini Atoll; North Pacific operations; East Coast operations; Korean War operations; supplying the Trust Territories. After another routine assignment with the U.S. 7th Fleet between October 1962 and April 1963, Tolovana entered a decade in which her service mirrored the increasingly more direct involvement of US forces in Vietnam War. During that period, she made eight deployments to the Western Pacific. Her crew members qualified for combat campaign ribbons. On her next cruise to the Western Pacific - July to November 1965 - America's buildup had begun full force in Vietnam. From that point on, she concentrated repleneshing ships in combat zone, returning briefly to Subic Bay in the Philippines or to Yokosuka or Sasebo in Japan to refill the tanks. She contributed by enabling American warships to remain in action for extended periods of time. There were breaks for the sailor boys of Tolovana - calling at various liberty ports in the Far East such as HongKong, Bangkok, Thailand, Yokosuka & Sasebo, Japan and Kaohsiung, Taiwan. During the 1967 and 1968 deployment, she was ordered north to provide logistics support for ships which answered the call of USS Pueblo, captured on the high seas in violation of international law by forces of North Korean Navy. On January 8, 1973 RVN, sailor boy while on duty in Vietnam became a survivor of U.S. Forces Bomb attack (Friendly fire) in Danang. His captain did not survive unfortunately. Fate of Tolovana - sold for scrapping on October 16, 1975.

FW: Pilipino Weekend gathering

@ Kangaroo Tim Down Under

Thank you much!  May I add I have 2 pictures of the Last Supper; I was the crazy woman going around with a camera; I have a WengWeng niece and a John-John nephew; I have a Louis Vuitton I secretly bought not in a swap-meet (you know the writer is from Los Angeles because anywhere else is called flea market) but in an island in Greece; when I was in the Philippines there's someone cleaning in the kitchen and learned beforehand she's a relative); lumpia is my favorite food and that's my first line of attack!  Everything mentioned is all so true and I've done them all 100% each and everytime I have attended a party, religious or otherwise.  Right, I'm proud to be a Pinoy, also.  God broke the mold when He created the Filipinos.

HOW WOULD YOU KNOW YOU'RE AT A FILIPINO PARTY?

 Simple!!!

-    You're an hour late and there's still nobody there!

-    There's enough food to feed the Philippines ..

-    You can't even get through the door because there's a pile of 50 shoes blocking the way.

-    You see a huge fork and spoon on the wall, a framed picture of the Last Supper, a huge Santo Nino, and a barrel man.

-    They' re singing "Peelings" on karaoke.

-    There's a piano in the living room for decoration.

-    You are greeted by a Tita Baby and/or a Tito Boy.

-    The older men are in the garage playing posoy-dos, or poker or 31, the women are in the kitchen gossiping, or are playing mahjong, the other people are in    the entertainment room singing karaoke, and the kids are outside the streets running around unsupervised.

-    There's goat 'pulutan' being cooked.

-    There's a crazy woman with a camera going around the room snapping away and yelling, "Uy peeeek-chuuur! "

-    You enter a family party and you "Mano" to half the old crowd and when you leave you have to say goodbye to EVERYONE that's related to  you as a sign of    respect.

-    You end up saying hello and goodbye for a total of 30-40 minutes.

-    You know you're at a Filipino party when you hear a male's voice on the karaoke trying to emulate Frank Sinatra's "My Way".

-    Women are still doing the line dance to "todo todo "..

-    When there's at least one or more with the name : JP,JJ, JT,TJ,DJ,AJ, RJ,LJ,  Lingling, Bingbing, Tingting, Dingding, Wengweng, Bongbong, Dongdong etc.

-    All the old aunties and guests are already wrapping up food to take home.

-    You have the Pacquiao fight on the illegal cable boxes on the 70" LCD in the movie room, The 10 yr old 50" CRT in the living room, The 15 yr old 30" tube in    the breakfast nook, The 20 yr old 15" tube in the kitchen, The 30 yr old 13" tube in the garage And the  Little portable by the BBQ grill, Because TVs are    NEVER retired in a Filipino household, they merely get demoted to whichever room doesn't have a TV yet(hahaha), then it ends up in the balikbayan box to    be sent to a relative back home, and it ends up being the main TV at the house again.

-    The aunties & guests are showing off their "designer" Louis Vuitton and Coach bags that they secretly bought at a swap-meet.

-    Someone is always in the kitchen constantly cleaning up, and you're not sure if she's the maid or a relative, so you greet and kiss them  on the cheek    anyway.

-    Relatives/friends will ask you where you work and if it's a retail job or if you work at an amusement park, they'll ask if you can get them a discount.

-    The lumpia is gone in 5 minutes and they are frying up another batch.

-    They play "Achy-Breaky Heart" over and over again.

-    What starts as a religious gathering turns into an illegal gambling set up by the end of the night!

OH DI BA? >>>>>ARE YOU NOT  PROUD BEING A FILIPINO?

My Philippines - Through The Eyes Of A Filipino

I say, well written.

..... Through The Eyes Of A Filipino .....
Hazelyne M. Elgar
Listen to me!
You might think we are a poor nation,
but when I look around me I do not see just poverty.
Instead, I see farmers, back bent from sun up till sun down nurturing the land.
I hear fisherfolks heaving, as they gamble with their lives
amidst angry winds and rough water just to nourish their families.
I feel the weary legs of children from far-flung barrios,
as they cross rivers and mountains and walk for miles,
just to get to school because they still dream.
I see determination in the eyes of street children
playing tag with cars flying past on a ruthless highway
in order to augment their parent's meager earnings.
In the face of destitution, the Filipinos are steadfast.
That is courage.
You rebuke us for the graft and corruption plaguing our government,
but when my eyes skim the front pages of broadsheets, I do not see hopelessness.
Instead, I am inspired by stories about pushcart classes
and strangers swimming in deep murky flood waters to save nameless individuals.
I immerse myself in news
about how my countrymen unceasingly believe in the spirit of unity.
I revel because millions of Filipinos still voted for change.
At times when we are at the receiving end of the world's censure,
I choose to see the noble intentions of fallible men to help.
In tumultuous situations, when the urge to hold others culpable is difficult to resist,
I hear a leader embracing the liability just like a leader should.
In the face of adversity, the Filipinos are united.
That is courage.
You chastise millions of my countrymen
for leaving our motherland to seek greener pastures.
Answer me this:
have you ever listened to how they whimper at night because they long for home?
When Filipinas, forced to work away from their dear ones,
shed silent tears as they lull to sleep infants not their own
I begin to understand what unconditional love is.
You lure away our engineers, artists and teachers with a promise of a good life.
The loving hands of our nurses tend the health of your people.
Do not dare ask why we need to fill the void in your labor force!
The Overseas Filipino worker
is intelligent, ingenious, hard working and resilient.
I see that, and in my eyes they are heroes.
In the face of obligation, the Filipinos are self-sacrificing.
That is courage.
You are at liberty to express your opinion about my country,
but you can never take away my pride,
for I belong to a people united in faith and love.
I am Filipino, and no matter where I go I will always be one.
I do not doubt that the time for change will one day come for the Philippines .
Our flag, cast in the sun's glorious light, will be waving high.
My countrymen's sacrifices will not be in vain.
We will face the future with courage.
As one, we will reach out to the world and the world will embrace us.
Believe me, because I will take the lead.

Faces in a crowd- close up

@ Lilian
Yep! I love the digital age.  One of my favorite TV shows at the moment  is handsome Jim Caviezel's "Person of Interest" on CBS (Thursday).  A good friend of mine saw him at Chicago O'Hare Airport and he's quite a nice guy.  Right.  He was Actor/Director Mel Gibson's Christ in the award-winning film "Passion of the Christ."  Thanks for sharing.

This is really amazing.  You have to double click on a person in the crowd to start the zooming.  Repeat several times and you get down to the individual's face, still in remarkably good focus!

THIS IS  HOW THE POLICE CAN NOW IDENTIFY RIOTERS &  TROUBLE MAKERS USING HIGH DEFINITION ADVANCED  TECHNOLOGY.   DON'T THINK OF HIDING  YOURSELF AMONGST THOUSANDS.............YOU CAN  BE EASILY DETECTED &  IDENTIFIED.

Using the  same technology as Google Earth to track you, be  warned it will be most difficult to lose  yourself in any crowd.  YOU CAN  EASILY BE DETECTED AND  IDENTIFIED.

You can  zero in on any one specific single face. The  clarity is  unbelievable.      This  is the crowd before the riots in  Vancouver.

Put your cursor anywhere in the crowd and double-click a couple of times.  Then  do it again--and again. It just keeps  enlarging. To further  help with image, use the scroll button in the  centre of your  mouse.

Zero in on  ANY one specific single face.  The clarity  is  unbelievable.

This is  the photo taken by Port Moody photographer  Ronnie Miranda that appeared in the Tri-City  News last Friday (24-June).  Quite  scary, eh?  You can see - perfectly - the  faces of every single individual - and there  were thousands!  Just think  what the police and the military have at their  disposal.
