Nuclear Submarines Rickover

ADMIRAL HYMAN G. RICKOVER   FATHER OF THE NUCLEAR NAVY   He harnessed the power of the atom to drive the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, whose trip under the polar ice pack was one of the great adventure stories of the 1950s.  Later, the flamboyant maverick and unique American hero would build the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the first commercial nuclear power plant.

SUBMARINES ARE THE MODERN DENIZENS OF THE DEEP.  It first achieved as a weapon of war during World War I, hundreds of years after the publication of Jules Verne's book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.  German U-boats (unterseebooten) called submarines demonstrated by sinking three British cruisers in one engagement.  In May 1915, Germans torpedoed the British  passenger liner Lusitania, three years after the sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic when it hit an iceberg a few hours before reaching New York.  A very bad year for the British, indeed! The vessel could hide beneath the surface of the sea and attack enemy warships and merchant ships.  It played a bigger role during World War II in that according U.S. Navy estimates three fourths of all damage during wartime were inflicted by submarines.  U.S. Navy submarines accounted for two of every three large Japanese merchant ships sunk and one of every three Japanese warships during World War II.  In the North Atlantic Ocean, Allied nations developed new convoy techniques to meet the German challenge and the development of radar and sonar added ways of locating the enemy's submarines.

The submarine Nautilus began operating with nuclear power in 1955.  Until the early 1950's, all submarines had diesel or gasoline engines for surface operations, and electric motors for underwater operations.  The US Navy has developed a new look with a rounded, fish-shaped body and a blunt round nose to create less water-resistance and can go faster under water.
Ohio-class submarines are nuclear-powered submarines named after the lead submarine, USS Ohio.  Submarines are named after sea creatures or related words, i.e. nautilus, trident, but newer ones are named after the states.  The US Navy has 18 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and guided missile submarines (SSGN).  My sailor boy brother told me one missile could wipe out a small nation.  He almost served in a submarine but had cold feet and opted out when a US submarine just exploded and sank in the 60's.
USS Trident
The 14 Trident II SSBNs together carry approximately 50 percent of the total US active inventory of strategic thermonuclear warheads.  The exact number of warheads deployed in the oceans varies, classified and unpredictable, always at or below a maximum number set by various Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties (SART).  The Ohio-class submarines were designed specifically for extended war-deterrent patrols.  Each of these submarines is provided with two complete crews, called the Blue Crew and Gold Crew, with each crew serving 90-days deterrent patrols.  Submariners are now better equipped and have bigger space to rest and play.
Typhoon-class of the Russian Navy
The Typhoon-class submarine of the Russian Navy is the world's largest, as big as a supercruise ship.  However, the Ohio-class submarine warships of the US Navy carry more missiles and warheads (24) while the Typhoon (20).

Web Page: Return of U.S. Forces to Subic
*************************************
There's must be a change of plan because of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan.  The U.S. military is moving out of Japan and planning to move in in the U.S. territory of Guam.  Senior Senators Daniel Inouye of Hawaii and Thad Cochran of Mississippi were on a secret fact-finding mission in freeport Subic Bay.  The Philippines kicked out the U.S. forces in both bases of Subic Bay and Clark in 1994 which was hastened by the destructive force of Mt. Pinatubo burying the AFB and the surrounding town like ancient Pompeii.  Funny, I remember very well, of all things, among the survivors was a pink pig being led by a little girl.  Okedoke.  Are you in favor of the return of U.S. Forces?  As you know, there are some Filipino never-do-well who are always protesting that the Philippines is a puppet of the U.S. Government.  Because of the Spratly Islands dispute with China,  the Philippine Congress may say yes and welcome the possibility of the return of Uncle Sam.

Subject: RETURN OF U.S. FORCES TO SUBIC

DEAR FRIENDS: YOUR PARTICIPATION IS REQUESTED!

I was born and raised in the Philippines and now a US citizen.

The news from the Philippine Daily Inquirer about the trip of US Senators Daniel Inouye and Thad Cochran plus the recent visit of the US Ambassador to the Philippines to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Subic , for the possible return of US Forces  prompted me to write this appeal. This is a request for your participation by way of sending this information to your family, your friends and copy furnished myself, because I will forward thousands of signatories that I have gathered to the Philippine Congress and Senate for appropriate action. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CIRCULATE THIS APPEAL.

The recent intrusion of China to our shores and the economic impact are enough reasons to invite back the US Forces to Subic Bay. The global security and the special bond of friendship between our two nations can not be overlooked by our Philippine leaders. We have nurtured the partnership and this is the opportunity to improve the plight of our less privileged kababayans especially in the countryside. If we are blessed here, this simple act of responding to my appeal is  bringing hope to the poor. We are counting on you and they are counting on us for help. Let us seize this opportunity and lift a finger to improve the country. Please remember- " Ang sakit ng kalingkingan ay damdam ng buong katawan and Kung hindi ngayon kailan pa?"

Secondly, consider our meager military and defense capabilities. We need a strong partner to defend "Lupang Hinirang".  Subic offers our best assets to support the return of US Forces because Subic has world class workers. Many of them are now in the US and we can entice them to go back. Most of us sends financial support to our relatives especially in times of need and calamities. They need us more than ever and to partner with US Forces- they might find hope before its too late. Hope is within our reach if you  and I will do something. Further, "walang nabubuhay para sa sarili lamang dahil tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa't isa." Please contribute your email  because it is very important to them and to me. Please send this back to me and in turn I will forward it to the leadership in the Philippines. Thank you and may you be blessed a hundredfold. Sincerely, Ernie E. Tawatao, SecGen,CCAA-USA COUNCIL at: tongtawatao@yahoo.com.

  2. THINGS ARE DIFFERENT NOW. ADMIRAL RICKOVER, A POLISH JEW IMMIGRANT, WHO CAME TO AMERICA WHEN HE WAS SIX YEARS OLD HAD SOME PERSONAL HARD BATTLES OF HIS OWN WITH THE NAVY AND YET GOT THINGS DONE WITH HIS FEW FRIENDS IN CONGRESS. QUESTION? DO YOU KNOW OF NEW IMMIGRANTS TO THE UNITED STATES OF A. WHO CONTRIBUTED IN MAKING THIS COUNTRY THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH?
