According to a
research done by Dr. Anwar T. Merchant of the Population Health
Research Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, that was published in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there are differences in
HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), also known as the good
cholesterol, and Triglycerides among different ethnic groups due
to carbohydrate intake.

Dr. Merchant and
colleagues studied and analyzed the diet and blood fats of
619 Canadians of South Asians, Europeans, Native Americans,
and Chinese.  In their findings, South Asians ate the most
carb and had the lowest HDL while the Chinese ate the less carb
and had the highest HDL.

The relative
connection between carb and HDL remained after the adjustment in
age, ethnicity, BMI (Body Mass Index), and alcohol intake.
The participants consuming the most carb have an average of 1.08
mmol/L, compared to 1.21 mmol/L for those who had intake of less
carb.  Each additional 100 gram/day of carb is a drop to 0.15
mmol/L of HDL.  The Triglycerol level also rose with high
carb intake.  The study also found that consuming sugar sweet
soft drinks and snacks lowered the HDL level.
