ST. PATRICK WAS ORIGINALLY FROM ENGLAND, NOT IRELAND. He came to Ireland as a slave, kidnapped at age 16 by Irish pirates during a raiding party who took him away from his well-to-do family and homeland. Patrick spent 6 years as slave (thank God, not 12!) to herd and tend sheep, trafficked before escaping and returning home to England. He ran away from his slavemaster and traveled 200 miles to the coast. He came across a ship that was preparing for departure and requested for free passage. He was refused at first, but in answer to his silent prayer to God, the sailors called him back. After a period of spiritual meditation, he became a priest and returned to Ireland on March 25, 433 as a missionary and began to preach the gospel, converting many. He did this for 40 years while living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering. Kings, their families, and the entire kingdom converted to Christianity after hearing his message. The story of Patrick's life journey and spiritual quest is told in a brief volume entitled "The Confessions of St. Patrick." It's available as a free download from http://www.amazon.com
On February 8th the Catholic Church marked the International Day of Prayer Against Human Trafficking. The prayer of intention of the faithful that day was for all those who have been trapped in a life of involuntary servitude. In the US Congress this week, Senator Mitch McConnell (R - KY) introduced a law on Human Trafficking.
