Flor Contemplacion 20

THE PHILIPPINES IS A COUNTRY OF SERVANTS.  THAT BEING SAID, FILIPINO DOMESTIC HELPERS ARE THE MOST RESPECTFUL, CARING AND HARDWORKING OVERSEAS WORKERS  IN THE WORLD.  What happened to Filipino maid Flor Contemplacion 20 years ago caused an international outcry and diplomatic rift between the Philippines and Singapore for several years.

Flor Contemplacion was born in San Pablo City, Laguna, Philippines on January 7, 1953.  On May 4, 1991, Delia Maga, a Filipino domestic worker, was found strangled to death in Singapore.  The four-year-old Nicholas Huang she was babysitting and taking care of was discovered drowned.  Contemplacion, whose name was mentioned in the dead maid's diary confessed upon interrogation by the police, her defense was she was having bizarre symptoms of epilepsy and migraine headache that day.  Her medical evidence was rejected by the trial judge and she was sentenced to death.  There was very little support by the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, did not send a consular representative throughout her trial which angered so many Filipinos until these days.  Many Filipinos believed her to be innocent or was insane if she did commit the murders.  The personal plea from former President Fidel Ramos to stay the execution was to no avail.

She was executed in Changi prison on March 17, 1995.  Her body was met by First Lady Amelita Ramos at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

  1. It says "temporarily out" due to copyrighted photos. Well, I saw the photos at the time and they were not that clear and well-defined, the Getty Images. I hope it comes back with better photos.

  2. THIS IS JUST VERY SAD ABOUT THE CONTEMPLACION FAMILY: LAST WEEK ANOTHER SON WAS PUT IN SAN PABLO LAGUNA JAIL DUE TO DRUG TRAFFICKING. IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY.
