I REMEMBER MY FIRST THANKSGIVING

It seems just like yesterday when your remember what happened many years ago.  There were six of us foreign exchange students renting and living on the top floor of a house owned by a Puerto Rican family in the midwest.  It was a big house so it was a very good accomodation for all of us.  We equally shared in everything - the payment for the house rent, the grocery and all the good stuff.  Before that, I was living temporarily, about two weeks, at the Nursing dormitory of the hospital where I started my medical laboratory training.  I noticed my food in the refrigerator common to all of us would be gone sometimes.  I never found out who was eating my food.  No accusations, I did not want to point fingers.  Needless to say I was happy the school manager found a place for us. We came from a profoundly Catholic country, The Philippines, so we don't really celebrate Thanksgiving Day as a holiday but instead we celebrate the joy of Christmas season.  America is the Land of the Pilgrims and we considered ourselves pilgrims, too.  Someone went to the grocery the day before and bought a 20-pound turkey.  The roasted turkey was very good! Also the gravy.  Just like the turkey that was, we were stuffed!

I love this song by Woody Guthrie

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND

CHORUS

This land is your land
This land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me.

As I was walking the ribbon of highway
I saw above me and endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me.

Especially this Thanksgiving Day, I'm most grateful to all the patriots and soldiers, living and dead, who gave the ultimate sacrifice so their fellow Americans would be able to have the blessings of liberty, freedom and pursuit of happiness.  May God bless the USA!
