Charitable Giving

SOMEBODY'S THOUGHTS ON GIVING

Of all the ways we are asked to be generous, giving our money can be the most challenging.  God understand this.  Remember though that we are called to be generous with all our gifts, including our money.  We are called to give from our "first fruits" and not from what is "leftover".

It's always been a challenge to donate with today's economic situation.  With the blizzard of letters from charitable organization asking for donations we can only give as much and choose who to help the most.  What's nice of these charities is they are very appreciative of whatever you give, big or small.

GIVE!

Natural disasters are always happening all over the world.  What happened in Haiti is truly devastating.  An earthquake of 7.3 magnitude (for about 35 seconds) in 200 years at that.  When I was growing up in the Philippines we had mild earthquakes occasionally.  I did not know much then and I just stayed in the shaking wooden house.  Now, I know better - run out for your life if you can.  But then, what can you do in 35 seconds when you have to pause and ask what's happening? Not much.  We had a fault line in Illinois also just like the San Andreas Fault that line from San Francisco to as far as Oregon.  I experienced 2 earthquakes in Chicago - in the year 1992, if I'm not mistaken, and the other one I forgot what year.
I have often wondered why Haiti remained poor compared with its neighbor the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean nations.  Is it because of its French Connection and the others under Spain?  I wonder if Baby Doc Duvalier (and wife Michelle) are still alive and living in Paris?.
What are the geological folks doing that they don't monitor future earthquakes, warning people in advance? At least there should be some kind of tremor.  They must be sleeping on the job.
Haiti is the playground of charitable organizations.  Every week I get mails from Food For The Poor and Catholic Relief Services asking for donations.  I saw on FOX NEWS SUNDAY the 2 ex-Presidents, George W & Bill Clinton, coming together to help the people of Haiti. Praying for them will be a great help also as blessings, disguised or otherwise, come in many miracles.
One thing is for sure - it's a new beginning in rebuilding Haiti.

  1. I did a Bing- Baby Doc is still alive and well in Paris. He's contributing 5 million euros ($ 8 million) to his long suffering countrymen in Haiti. He must be awfully rich if he's got that much moolah.

  2. You're definitely right about it being difficult to donate money. However, like you said, lots of charities are grateful for any donation, large or small. I think that really goes to show how much help is needed. It's so comforting to know that so much attention is being given to Haiti. They are truly in dire need of help. Thank goodness there are so many charities out there dedicated to serving the people and children of Haiti! http://www.childrenofportauprincehaiti.org/about-us/
