Spirit of Dubuque

THE PORT OF DUBUQUE   THE FIRST AND OLDEST CITY IN IOWA   It is located on the west bank of Mississippi River opposite the boundary between Illinois and Wisconsin.  It was named after Julien Dubuque, a French-Canadian adventurer from Quebec and the first white man to settle in Iowa.  He arrived in 1785 and earned the friendship of the Meskwaki Indian tribe by learning their language and trading with them.  They gave him the title of Little Night.  He began mining lead ore in 1788 south of Dubuque.   He was given a chieftain's funeral when he died.
