Rare Moments
from the Pages of my Mind

My Dear Filipino Americans:

The HR677 is a House of Representative bill
advocating the grant of $800 monthly pension to Filipino veterans living in the
Philippines.  It died in the bipartisan hall of Congress last year to the
frustration of American Coalition for Filipino Veterans (ACFV), a lobby
group.  At the APEC in Chile last November, President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo had a short 'one on one' talk with President Bush and raised
the benefits issue for the Filipino veterans at the dinner.  President Bush
asked her, "What more benefits do the veterans need?  We already took care
of them."  President GMA replied, "Those veterans would like to get the
benefits that they could take home to the Philippines."  The Bush
Administration had already pushed the Veterans Benefit Act of 2003, Veterans
Health Care, Capital Asset, and Business Improvement Act of 2003 - laws that
benefited Filipino American veterans.  In California, Governor Arnold
spared some 1,700 Filipino American veterans from being stripped of their cash
benefits under the sweeping budget cuts that he proposed in Sacramento.
What happens in America, stays in America.

We are proud Filipinos.  The
Philippines is a sovereign government.   Stop being corrupt.
Stop protesting and start governing.  Stop begging the United States
for piecemeal benefits.  Did the freedom fighters of England, France,
Poland, Norway and other European countries who fought WWII with the Americans
asked for equity bill?  Being born after the war I'm not sure and I don't
know.  May be not.  Congressman Henry Hyde (R-IL) told Filipino
American veterans pushing for the bill, "....You were fighting for your
country."  In my opinion, why should the US government pay the benefits of
Filipino American veterans living in the Philippines?  Isn't it the duty of
the Philippine government to pay for their benefits?  I don't get it.
Thousands of Americans soldiers died in the famous Death March in Bataan and at
the Fall of Corregidor.  Should not the Americans who survived in the
battlefield of the Philippines be given equity paychecks by the Philippine
government too?  Fifty years from now, will the Iraqis soldiers who fought
side by side with the Americans in the Iraq War be asking for Iraqi American
equity bill?

Yes, the US is a superpower....but it was
achieved at a very high price.  It's envied by unholy alliance of evil
people.  People on the other side the world - they don't see the
American lives lost for the sake of freedom and democracy during WWI, WWII,
Korean War, Vietnam War, The Gulf War, and the war in Afghanistan and
Iraq.  The more the US gives the more it's hated.  Instead of saying
thanks for its generosity the US gets attacked in a traitorous deed.
The US gets blamed for the ills of the world for no reason or many
reasons.  There is no pleasing anyone.

To the Filipino American veterans of WWII in
the Philippines - all I can say is "Thank You" for fighting for our own
country.

When you turn green with envy

You are ripe for trouble.

                                                                     -Proverbs 14:30
