BARABBAS  -   THE PREFERRED PRISONER

JUDGED BY THE JURY OF HIS PEERS

The story of Barabbas is found in each of the four Passion narratives.  Very little is known about him outside of his brief appearance during the trial of Jesus.  The name Barabbas is an Aramaic word that literally means "son of the father."  Pilate will face him off against Jesus and unwittingly set up the question: Which one is true "son of the father?"  The people will choose Barabbas.

In 1962, Barabbas was a critically-acclaimed movie, starring Anthony Quinn (later to be more famous for his role in Zorba).

The movie was based on a 1950 novel by the Nobel Prize-winning author, Par Fabian Lagerkwist, and follows Barabbas' life after he is spared from execution.  Born in Sweden in 1891, he decided early in life that he wanted to be a writer.  A playwright and a novelist, he often dealt with the issue of man's relationship with God.  A self-described religious atheist, it was a situation he struggled personally.  His novel, Barabbas, was his first international success.

Lagerkwist received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951.

  1. Okedoke. Two people could not believe that there was already a newspaper Before Christ (B.C.)and that this obit did not exist. Of course, the Dead Sea Scrolls were not discovered until the late 1940's. In fact, the Egyptians invented paper from the papyrus plant in 3000 B.C.
