NOVEMBER 10, 2004 57TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ILLINOIS SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY DR. RICHARD FACKLAM - PASTEUR AWARD RECIPIENT

The annual award of the Illinois Society for Microbiology was established in 1948.  The purpose of the award is to give public recognition to some person who has made an outstanding contribution to the Science of Microbiology.

What is a Facklamia?

He's a dedicated government civil servant working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

1966 Research Microbiologist
1972 Chief of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus Section
1980 Bureau of Laboratory and Bureau of Epidemiology - NCID
1982 Chief, Reference Bacteriology Section
1986 Chief, Respiratory Diseases Laboratory Section
1993 Chief, of Childhood and Vaccine Prevention Diseases Laboratory Section
1997 Chief, of streptococcus laboratory in RDB
2004 Futures Initiative

What is a Facklamia hominis?

I have survived 7 re-organizations each time given different responsibilities, however I have always managed to keep working in the strep lab.
I have had 8 different managers, most of whom let me make the major decisions on program direction.
Has working with streptococci and gram positive cocci been a good career choice? There are many responsibilities and rewards.

In 1990, Jim Henson, creator of Miss Piggy, Kermit and The Muppets, died of invasive respiratory infection due to Group A Streptococci (GAS). The family has given very generous donation to CDC.

  1. Featuring Dr. Richard Facklam - Past recipient of 2004 ISM Pasteur Award. It's the only award of its kind in the U.S. and the world. Not even the Pasteur Institute in Paris has this title.
