‪Lab Techs Forever‬‎

GUIDELINES FOR ETHICAL BEHAVIOUR
BOARD OF REGISTRY & ASCP

Recognizing that my integrity and that of my profession must be pledged to the best possible care of patients based on the reliability of my work.

I Will:
  • treat patients and colleagues with respect, care, and thoughtfullness.
  • perform my duties in an accurate, precise, timely, and responsible manner.
  • safeguard patient information as confidential, within the limits of the law.
  • prudently use laboratory resources
  • advocate the delivery of quality laboratory services in a cost-effective manner.
  • work within the boundaries of laws and regulations and strive to disclose illegal or improper behavior to the appropriate authorities.
  • continue to study, apply, and advance medical laboratory knowledge and skills and share such with my colleagues, other members of the health care community, and the public.

Once a lab tech, always a lab tech.

Lab Techs are the phantoms of the hospital.  Patients, in or out, don't realize there are many lab techs working 24/7 behind the scene.  Due to the very nature of their job, lab techs don't have bedside relationships with sick patients in comparison with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.  However, there is one exception.  The closest representative of a lab tech to the outside world of medical care is the hard-working phlebotomist.  The phlebotomist has interaction with patients by drawing blood samples and bringing them immediately to the lab for processing and testing.

Lab techs are the invisible links - performing analysis of patient body fluids and tissues.  They are very much involved in providing patient critical test results to doctors, nurses and other related medical and clerical departments so that life-saving treatments are administered and monitored to their patients.

So remember... if one sick day and you find yourself inside a clinical lab or hospital, there are hidden lab techs crouching somewhere in nooks and corner floors dedicated in making you healthy and who are very much concerned for your well-being.
