THE BORDER TOWN OF MCALLEN, TEXAS, A WINTER TEXAN PARADISE, WAS VERY MUCH IN THE NEWS LATELY WITH THE MOUNTING CRISIS IN THE IMMIGRATION INFLUX OF UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN.
Texas lawmakers Senator John Cornyn (R) and Representative Henry Cuellar (D) announced legislation Monday, July 14, to speed the removal of thousands of Central American kids from the US-Mexico border. Under current law, the kids are allowed to stay while awaiting an eventual hearing in the backlogged of immigration court system. The Cornyn-Cuellar Bill would amend a 2008 law passed to address victims of sex trafficking. The law guaranteed protection to unaccompanied youths arriving from non-contiguous countries -- anywhere except Mexico and Canada. Immigrant advocacy groups and key Senate Democrats are opposed and making it unclear if there will be a deal or no deal. So far, more than 1,200 had been returned home as of the end of June out of the 57,000 children who have arrived at the border.
Will this proposed legislation by two concerned Members of Congress be dead in the water of Rio Grande River?
