EVANSTON, ILLINOIS
JUNE 1, 2013  8:00 PM - I'M NOT SURE WHEN THIS RAINBOW APPEARED WHEN I WAS TOLD TO LOOK OUTSIDE MY DOOR (I was watching IL VOLO on PBS).  It was raining very hard before the hour, on and off, and it just stopped raining.

Rainbow is a natural phenomenon which appears in the sky when the sun shines after a shower of rain.  If the rain has been heavy, the bow may spread all the way across the sky, and its two ends seem to rest on the earth below with maybe a leprechaun guarding his pot of gold (?).  The reflection and refraction of the sun's rays as they fall on the drops of rain cause this formation and gives off seven colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Violet, Indigo and Blue ( R O Y G V I B).  But these colors blend into each other so the observer rarely see more than four clearly.  Sunlight is a combination of the seven colors and each color has a particular range of wavelengths.

You see a rainbow when the sun is behind you and the rain is falling in front of you.  As a ray from the sun passes into a drop of rain, the water acts like a tiny prism.  The ray is bent (refracted) as it enters the drop and is separated into different colors.  As it strikes the inner surface of the drop, it is turned back (reflected).  On leaving the drop, it is further refracted or dispersed.  Each color is formed by rays that reach the eye at a certain angle, and the angle for a particular color never changes.
