DEEP IN THE HEART OF McALLEN TEXAS IS A BEAUTIFUL WAR MEMORIAL FOR ALL THE FALLEN SOLDIERS, BEGINNING FROM THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR TO THE LATEST WARS AND IN BETWEEN.
The war memorial was started in 1988 by Army Colonel Frank S. Plummer, 89, a veteran of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. I sincerely said serving in three wars did him good because he looked so young. He put his heart and soul through the years in constructing, adding and building it to completion. However, dedications are a continuing work of progress as long as there are wars and war heroes, song and unsung, are made everyday. There are 1.4 million Americans names etched at the war memorial.
I was deeply honored to have visited Col. Plummer and his lovely wife Kathy recently at his home office in McAllen with retired US Air Force Sergeants Nap and Marilou, two of the many Guardians of the war memorial. I thanked him for his sole efforts and hard works in creating such marvelous war memorial. Of course, he could not have done it alone without the help of many donors, big and small and the City of McAllen in granting the land. I said to myself, self, this man should be given the Presidential Medal of Freedom! He's most worthy of the award.
Col. Plummer told us he was originally from Oklahoma and of Indian blood. He was in the Philippines after the Liberation and was at the University of Santo Tomas, an American prison camp during Japanese occupation.
