Neal Schon, lead guitarist, songwriter and vocalist of Journey, was on the lookout for quite sometime since former group member and lead singer Steve Perry quit the band for no reason. He decided to search for a new voice and from thousands of singers on You Tube found the voice he was looking for in Arnel Pineda. The falsetto voice seemed so very familiar, the perfect replacement sound with an amazing similarity to Perry's voice. Schon traveled to Manila where he located Arnel living on the streets and parks, sleeping with other homeless children. In the film documentary -- "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" -- Arnel, now 45, describes how he used to sing at local funerals to earn a couple of biscuits and a cup of coffee to survive. It was really and truly a rag to riches story of a lucky singer, from the street to the world stage entertaining 80,000 fans a night with his heart and soul.
I was watching a few weeks ago a local ABC Chicago morning show, Windy City Live with hosts Val Warner (my same birthday March 11) and Ryan Chiaverini. They had this nobody guest (don't know the guy, really), somehow the topic mentioned Journey and he just dissed Arnel (short and thin). But look who was talking - he's fat and ugly. Most of the time WCL has exciting guests though.

Concert
A benefit concert for internationally
acclaimed pianist and composer TOTI
FUENTES was held at the Philippine American United
Ecumenical Church in Chicago last April 24, 2005.
The locally
famous United Ecumenical Church
Choir opened the concert with the
spiritual hymn "Amazing Grace".
The Talented Toti
wowed the audience with his medley of popular movie theme songs
(Star Wars, 2001 Space
Odyssey,Terms of Endearment
and many old favorites) and his very own piano composition and
arrangement of "Intramuros". Chicago singer Rex Dimavivas also
performed at the affair.
He was born in Cagayan De Oro City, Philippines. He studied at the
prestigious University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music.
He met his dream wife
Jony who's from Czechoslovakia when he came to cold Chicago from
sunny California.
He realized his
musical dream of performing with Hollywood singers
like Aretha Franklin, La Toya Jackson, Sergio Mendes & Brazil
88, Tony Orlando & Dawn, Billy Preston, Peabo Bryson, Jeffrey
Osborne, The Platters and Jerry Lewis.
Toti says, "Music is the most powerful healing
factor for my recovery. I
wouldn't know what to do without music. Perhaps, I wouldn't
be alive today."

Here I am sitting on
my deck looking at my freshly mowed yard. It rained last night giving much
needed refreshment to the thirsty grass on the ground. I felt good
for having accomplished a lot of things earlier today: I called Mama Paz in
Texas and wished her a healthy and happy birthday (mabuhay!), I called Ted
at PinoyMonthly Community Affair to check the theatre tickets and
talked to Nini, my T-shirt connection. In other words, I've been name
calling lately which made me think about the origin of names. I must say,
my name has been misspelled, mispronounced, misused and abused. It
does not bother me because I understand that given names can sometimes be
corrupted by ignorant or misinformed people.
Primitive people are very superstitious when
it comes to disclosing their names to strangers. Some believe that if a
person knew your name, he could take over your identity, acquire power over you
and bring you harm and there's nothing you can do about it. Sound
familiar? So some people have kept their names secret, took a nick at their
names - hence the word nickname or pet-ite name. Early
writers used pen name or nom de plume (Mark
Twain/Samuel Clemens) to protect themselves from religious, political and
cultural persecutions. Long ago and in present day Hollywood, movie actors
and entertainers have changed their names in part or entirely (Harris Lillis
Crosby for Bing Crosby and Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre for
Cher). Criminals (Don
"Godfather" Corleone) and TV show spies (Sydney
Bristow for Jennifer Garner) use alias to disguise their
identities. The King of Pop Michael Jackson goes incognito when he goes on
