Jose P. Rizal - Filipino Hero

Dr. Jose P. Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna. He was a member of the Young Filipino Party, which demanded changes in the Spanish administration of the Philippines. The heat was on and he fled to Europe. He was for a few days even visited America. He became famous for his work in medicine, economics, political satires and poetry (Mi Ultima Adios). On his return he was banished in the island of Mindanao. On December 30, 1896, he was arrested and shot at Bagumbayan (Luneta), now renamed Rizal Park.

It's those little details, worthy of noting or not, that escapes your reading of history. So while looking at the sculptures depicting the martyrdom and execution of Rizal I noted that he was hit with three bullets at the back.

  1. Senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. (aka Bongbong), whose world famous mother is the former First Lady Imelda Marcos, now a congressman, is pushing Senate Bill 2743 to amend Executive Order No. 292 or Administrative Code of 1987, to change JOSE RIZAL DAY from December 30, the day of his death, to his birthday of June 19. He said, "The birthday of our national hero is a day of celebration of his life and his great contribution to the country's independence from foreign domination. It is fitting that Filipinos commemorate Rizal Day on June 19 as a day of triumph of the Dr. Jose Rizal's nationalism and patriotic ideals." The young and popular senator from Ilocandia has a future to be elected as President of the Philippines someday - if and when he ever throw his hat into the presidential ring. He made it possible for wind power to be built in northern Luzon and the grateful folks don't pay much in their electric bills.
