Everyone would like to have an expensive toy. Think of the space exploration program as an expensive toy of the the United States. In 47 years, we've conquered part of the planetary system by walking on the Moon and have gone to many space missions since then. Hopefully, 20 or 30 years from now we'll have a small colony of humans in Mars.
