of great importance for she knows I don't like to read.  People
with ADD and dyslexia are more visual.  This time it's not the group favorite star of the moment, Jennifer Garner of ALIAS and 13
GOING ON 30, but about great moments in management.  She has a master in
management you know.  The following excerpts from the page Firsthand Views of CAP TODAY publication was
written by innovation consultant, speaker and famous author Dale Dauten.  It is of particular importance to me
and others in the group for it focused and highlighted the life and momentous
career of Rear Admiral Connie
Mariano - one of the outstanding
people in the A.L.T. web Philippines
Shining.  She was the President's
doctor from 1992 with the first Bush, the Bill Clinton years and the first
year of the second Bush.  Reading into the page it proves once again how
and what an employee becomes is how your boss believe in you (remember Bela
Karoli of not so long ago Olympic Games the shove it words 'You
can do it?') and how the chain of command is pass on from boss to
employee and from old to new.

GREAT MOMENTS IN MANAGEMENT By Dale

     Here's a tidy comment I'm adding to my list of Things I Wish
Someone Had Said About Me.  "The organization got better the day he
started.

"How you look back on your time here will depend on
one thing: whether you're here to give or to get.  Those who give the most,
leave with the most." 

     Dr. Connie Mariano was speaking of one of her employees, the man
who eventually replaced her, Dr. Richard Tubb.  On his first day on the
job, Tubb would have gotten the same speech Mariano gave everyone who came to
work for her....

     White
House physicians are chosen through nominations from the branches of the
military.  Mariano was in San Diego, working for Dr. John Mitas, chairman
of the Department of Medicine at the Naval Hospital.  He called her in one
day and said: "I've just been reading the requirements for the job at the White
House.  I think you could do that job."

     Her reaction was surprise and
doubt.  Her hesitant reply was simply, "Well, I'm not so sure." Her boss
reacted emphatically: "I'm going to nominate you because I believe you can do
it.  I know you can."

     That's a simple conversation,
but a rare one, ranking as a Great Moment in Management.  Bad bosses don't
believe any of their employees are especially valuable and don't mind high
turnover.  Good bosses recognize talent and hold on to it fiercely, trying
to eliminate turnover.  Gifted bosses are willing to shove the best
employees along, thus encouraging employee turnover and gaining loyalty in
return - not just the usual stay-together loyalty, but the lifelong loyalty of a
true ally.  Even so, being willing to help a great employee leave takes
courage and selfishness.

      And so it was that
Cmdr. Connie Mariano went to the White House.  While she was there, she was
promoted to rear admiral.  Connie Mariano grew up around admirals, entering
their homes through the back, via the kitchen door, where the help came and
went.  Picture her father (He was a Navy man), standing in the State Dining
Room, with friends and relatives looking on, as well as Bill and Hillary
Clinton, watching his daughter become the first admiral of Filipino
descent.  No coming in the back door as an admiral's steward.  No, he
strode into the main entrance of the White House, and when he walked out, he
left as an admiral's father.

       Isn't that a
beautiful mental picture? It calls to the American soul.  It's a
reminder of the real American Dream.  The Dream has shrunk through the
years to a tawdry materialism.  That's not the American Dream, merely to
get rich.  No, it's the freedom to take a shot at a different life than the
one you were born into.  It isn't about wealth; it's about the wealth of
possibilities.

       And by the
way, Connie Mariano's old boss, Dr. Mitas, was also there that day she
became an admiral, no doubt smiling at what his understanding of the wealth of
possibilities has led to.  That's Great Moment in Management.

The next time you are washing your
hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it,
think about how things used to be .  Here are some facts about the
1500s:

Most people get married in June
because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by
June.  However, they were starting to smell so brides
carried a bouquet of
flowers to hide the body odor.  Hence the custom today of
carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub
filled with hot water.  The man of the house had the privilege of the nice
clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the
children-last of all the babies.  By then the water was so dirty you could
actually lose someone in it.  Hence the saying, "Don't
throw the baby
out with the
bath water."

Houses had thatched roofs-thick
straw-piled high, with no wood underneath.  It was the only place for
animals to get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice,bugs)
lived in the roof.  When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the
animals would slip and fall off the roof.  Hence the saying,
"It's raining cats
and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things
from falling into the house.  This posed a real problem in the bedroom
where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice, clean bed. 
Hence, a bed with big posts and sheet hung over the top afforded some
protection.  That's how canopy beds came
into existence.

The floor was dirt.  Only the
wealthy had something other than dirt.  Hence the saying
"dirt poor."

The wealthy had slate floors that
would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on the
floor to help keep their footing.  As the winter wore on, they kept adding
more thresh until when you opened the door it would start slipping
outside.  A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway.  Hence the
saying a "thresh hold."

Sometimes they could obtain pork,
which made them feel  quite special.  Whem visitors come over, they
would hang up their bacon to show off.  It was a sign of wealth that a man
"could bring home
the bacon."  They would cut off a little
to share with guests and would sit all around and "chew
the fat."

Those with money had plates made
of pewter.  Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach
onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death.  This happened most often
with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were
considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to
status.  Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the
middle, and guests got the top, or "upper
crust."

Lead cups were used to drink ale
or whisky.  The combination would sometimes knock them out a couple of
days.  Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare
them for burial.  They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of
days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if
they would wake up.  Hence the custom of holding a
"wake."

England is old and small and the
local folks started running out of places to bury people.  So they would
dig up coffins and would take the bones to a "bone house" and reuse the
grave.  When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to
have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people
alive.  So they thought they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse,
lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. 
Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the
"graveyard shift") to listen for the bell,
thus, someone could be "saved by
the bell" or was considered a
"dead ringer."

And that's the truth...Now,
whoever said that History was boring!!

THE YEAR OF LIVING POLITICALLY
.... The Democratic political war
game plan of hate against President Bush and the Republican Party has been
cooking since Al-Gore lost in the electoral vote of 2000.  This has been
validated in the recent Democrat convention in the Bean Town
of Boston.  The unleashing of political evil forces of hate from the
bowels of Fleet Centre by Black speakers, past presidents, and Hollywood minor
and major celebrities have been nothing but gas explosion of bad smell. 
Really and truly, the Democratic Party is the party of hate and divisiveness.
Take for instance the Evanston Democrat congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. 
When President Bush was here in Illinois more than a week ago to inspect a
police training facility against the war on terror and campaign fundraising, who
do you think organized a protest against President Bush outside the
building?  It was the annoying congresswoman.  I wonder what happened
to her husband who was involved in some kind of money trouble or whatever. 
It was hushed up right away in the Democratic Republic of Chicago.  The
hate never stops.  The Democrats are such sore losers and so bitter they
have become so divisive and could not go beyond acceptance of having lost the
presidential election that they have rejected the cordiality and dignified
political relationship extended to them by the Bush Administration.  The
Democrats and NAACP are so disrespectful of President Bush I was so glad,
so very glad, he turned down their invitation to speak.  Let me tell
you my dear relatives and friends in Texas, California, Florida and Illinois
that the days of passive Republicans are long over.  I  could never
ever forget when the young Republicans in Florida stormed the election office
when the votes were being stolen by the Democrats.  How many times do they
have to count, double count, and triple count those Florida votes? I was so
so impressed with that show of aggressive but dignified protest.  No
vulgarity like the Hollywood stars and comedian friends of Kerry.  Their
star power has no effect on me. I have boycotted their movies, CDs and
company products.  The hate by the White and Black Democrats especially in
my home State of Illinois is so deep-rooted I have avoided these people. 
The wife of Kerry, "Shove It" Teresa, is something else.  Some of the
A.L.T. officers and I think this woman does not come across as likable or
even fit to be a First Lady.  Is my hearing correct?  I was watching
NBC NEWS with Tom Brokaw during the Democratic Convention and he specially
mentioned ("Shove It") Teresa who's worth $1 billion was a humanitarian and gave
a $250,000 grant.  Don't you think for such enormous wealth that money is
way too paltry?  Next time I'd like to hear $500,000 or a million dollars
donated to as many as charities as possible.

No doubt, the liberal media in the Democratic
stronghold of New York, Chicago and Los Angeles want their boy Kerry to be
elected president and be in the White House come January, 2005.  Ain't
gonna happen my dear relatives and friends.  The rest of the American
people are not fools.  In the DNC, Kerry did not mention his record in
Congress as senator for 20 years.  Don't you think if you were the
presidential candidate you'd mention and enumerate in your speech your greatest
accomplishments to the American people?  Yes....he reported for duty but
missed reporting for duty in Congress to vote on very important legislative
issues of social, economic and military issues.  If ever he voted
- he voted LEFT.  None was said in his speech.  Another thing of
semi-important issue is the Gay-Lesbian groups who are Democrats. 
Where are these advocates?  What happened to them?  Why did they
become so silent so fast?  It was their time to shine and raise their
agenda. Their chance to voice their protest.  Get a promise of support from
the candidate they love.  I'd like to know why the Gays let go of this
opportunity.

Then the Democrats and liberal media were so full of
praise of the Bill Clinton speech.  Nothing this man say will ever impress
me as a private citizen.  Maybe because I'm just a foreign
born political observer (FBPO). Having born on the other side of the
fence, you usually see through the transparency.  The Islamic militants had
the perception of weakness of America during the Clintonian Era.  And yet,
in his speech the Democrats can do better.  Hello?  Do not believe an
iota that the world loved America before Bush became a president and that the
world hated America after Bush became a president.  The rest of the world
will always be envious and of course hate America - the lone superpower. 
Such is the fanaticism and ideology of these terrorists.  If America was so
loved by the world during the Clintonian Era, as Kerry claimed, why then we were
attacked on 9/11?  Because of, as the much-admired VP Dick Cheney said,
"the perception of weakness."  President Bush did the right thing and again
I was glad to hear yesterday of his resolve and determination to defend
this country even if heaven falls.  Let's face it....the Democrats are
sissies on defense.  Kerry is admittedly a war hero but his records show
the opposite. 

One thing that is being communicated to the whole world
right now is that America will never whole-heartedly trust again and that since
9/11 it will be extremely difficult for such thing to happen again because the
trust was forever broken.  I am for the Patriot Act and it's not really
what is being falsely said by civil liberty activists.

Then there was the Edwards mantra of two America. 
There are really many America not one or two.  Edwards and the Democrats
created the two America for being hateful and divisive.  They are the angry
Americans and they admit it with pride.

From: ALTPresident1                        THE WONDER OF MSN It is the 8th wonder of the world.  8 meaning infinity - it's all knowing, all seeing and all everywhere.  If you have MSN you have it all.  I love my Windows XP.  I, myself, being a lady of convenience think it is the best. Second to none.   Starting up with MSN is good for your health.  It gives you comfort, peace of mind and happiness.  It keeps you company in times of insanity, chaos, confusion, aggravation, humiliation, and destruction.  There will be 100 million people buying and replacing their obsolete computers in the coming year.  I don't see any reason why not MSN - be sensible and be economical.  GET MSN!  My spam e-mail 0-1; my pop ads 0-1; my windows update are automatic and up to the nanoseconds.  Virus?  What is that?  You do not need GGLE Search Engine when you have MSN Search - it is the tops.  My only problem with my MSN is....ME!  I have not tapped into its potential - not even a nanobyte - due to my laziness.  It's part of my genetic makeup.  I have my MSN Windows XP for more than 2 years and until now I do not know much about Microsoft Word, Microsoft Spreadsheet/Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Money.   What a waste for me - I don't have the passion.  But I kiss my MSN Windows XP goodbye before I close it for the day.  When you get MSN you are also giving to the global community.  Mr. Bill Gates and Mr. Paul Allen are the supreme humanitarians of all-time.  They give billions and billions of dollars in aid to AIDS prevention in Africa, India and the rest of the world.  So when you buy MSN you know where your money is going - it's going to the sick and poor.                         May the cybergods be with you.

He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it. 3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was work to do.

News Potpourri

Please download to your computer all "Documents" of interest to you.  I'll be deleting these old documents pretty soon.  I had deleted a lot already.  At a glance > ALT - More Professional and highly political Budz4ALT - More Personal and up close with members and friends B*U*S*T* - My own personal favorite because it's so much fun.  I was watching NBC local news two days ago.  The teachers in Gurnee, IL (Woodland District)  went ON STRIKE because they want more money.  They were asking for almost 30% wage increase in 3 years!  My goodness.  I worked in healthcare dedicated my life to the sick and I only got 1.5% wage increase per year!!!!!!  These teachers are so greedy. The Do Not Call Registry was put on hold by a judge in Nebraska.  I really don't have a problem with telemarketers because my computer is connected to my phone line (intentional).  I'm not a phone-aholic and my answering machine is always on.  My award-winning contributor, Susan, e-mailed me some really neat ideas how to zap these telemarketers.  I tried to forward it to the web sites but failed maybe because it was an attachment. I know Ahhnold will be great in the debate.  Everyone has skeleton in their closets.  I myself supported Proposition 187.  I even got hold of a letter from the then Gov. Pete Wilson (May 19,1995) sent to my family who used to live in California.  We were against illegal immigrants getting support.  60% of Californians voted for it but it was deemed unconstitutional.  My parents sent me their hard-earned money to support me when I was an exchange student.  The federal government even took some in the form of taxes.  Thousands of immigration applicants from all over the world (some waiting for 5-20 years) went through the legal channel and they are still waiting.  Nevertheless, that's why we have THE CONSTITUTION.  Nobody goes to court with clean hands.
