Maze: Shrine of St. Therese Our Lady of Mount Carmel

National Shrine of St. Therese of Lisieux and Carmelite Spiritual Center
Darien, Illinois

St. Therese of Little Ways is the beloved saint of the Society of the Little Flower, pilgrims, and friends.  St. Therese and the Carmelites are inspired by Our Lady of Mount Carmel.  In earlier times, the Carmelites from Europe were disillusioned with the wars and violence associated with the Crusades.  Because of this, some of the Carmelites stayed in the Holy Land on Mount Carmel and the mountain of Elijah.
They settled in wadi-ein-Siah and lived as hermits in caves for a while.  But eventually they needed the spiritual support of the community and had became aware that the Lady of Nazareth was opened to God's presence that she might rekindle the spark of faith amid the darkness of disappointment and disillusionment.  In the 1100s they built a chapel and named it Our Lady of this Place (Mary) or The Lady of the Mountain.  Nazareth is just across the Jezreel valley from Mount Carmel.

By the request of the Church, the Carmelites gradually migrated to Europe when Islam reclaimed the Holy Land within 100 years.  They continue to claim the Our Lady of this Place.  In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Carmelites and religious communities were under suppression.  St. Simon Stock had a vision of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, who said if the Carmelites wore their apron or habit in faith She would take care of them.  The Carmelites survived and the tradition of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel developed.
