Olympic Strong

CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS  [FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER]

The Olympic official motto was coined Fr. Henri Didon (1840-1900), a French Dominican priest in the 19th century.  He was a popular preacher, best known for his stirring sermons.  However, he was sometimes considered too modern and his controversial views earned him a seven year time of reflection in Corsica.  He returned in France in 1887, he became involved in his school's Olympics, won several medals as an outstanding athletes.  When he became the school principal, he introduced sports as a key component of an all-around education.

On March 7, 1891, Pierre de Coubertin, the father of modern Olympics, attended a talk given by Fr. Didon to members of a sports association.  The priest spoke of "citius, altius, fortius" focusing on self-improvement and discipline through sport rather than emphasizing coming in first place.  De Coubertin liked the phrase and used it as the official motto for the Olympics.

THE 2014 WINTER OLYMPICS WILL BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 6 IN SOCHI, RUSSIA.  Outstanding Olympic athletes from all over the world will be going to the place chosen by the Olympic committee, showing their hard-earned  talents in competitive sports.  Times changed.  Now the emphasis is counting how many medals in gold, silver and bronze is given to individual athlete.
