My High School

 Congrats old grads!

MY HIGH SCHOOL:
MANILA HIGH SCHOOL
"Education is learning what you didn't even know you didn't know."
~ Daniel J. Boorstin
Sandwiched between that first school foundation of elementary and higher college is that mid-high school stepping stone to another turning point in a teenager's life.  Indeed, schools are the workshop of humanity. There are so many high school memories long quite forgotten, some faded or lost, but just now being remembered and recalled page by page, flip by flip.  I finally got connected by the www with my batchmates late last year.  I said to myself, self, why don't you check and look if you'll recognize a few names.   The last time I saw our young and innocent faces was graduation day marching to the opera Aida by Giuseppi Verdi.
Wait...let me tell you a short history of my high school:
Manila High School was officially established in 1906 during the American colonial time under the tutelage of Dr. David P. Burrows, Director of Education and Mr. Charles H. Mages, Acting Superintendent of Manila City Schools.  The school operation officially started on June 11, 1906 as decided by the Bureau of Education.  A commemorative stamp was issued in 2006 in celebration of its 100th year anniversary.
Manila High School was the first public secondary school in the Philippines.  It is located on the same site where it is found today, at the corner of Victoria and Muralla Street inside the Walled City or Intramuros, the bastion of Spanish governance for more than 300 years.

The National Historical Institute declared Manila High School a historical site and a marker was unveiled on February 26, 1982 by Carlos P. Romulo,  one of its distinguished students.

Manila High School is the Alma Mater of three Philippine Presidents, many outstanding political and military leaders and many distinguished notables....
  • President Jose P. Laurel
  • President Manuel A. Roxas
  • President Elpidio Quirino
  • Conrado F. Benitez - Constitutionalist, lawyer, educator, and economist
  • Vicente Manansala - Renown Filipino artist and painter
  • Dr. Fe Del Mundo - 1977 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Public Service
  • Narciso Ramos - Former Member of Legislature and father of President Fidel V. Ramos
  • Carlos P. Romulo - Former Foreign Affairs Secretary and First President of the UN General Assembly
  • General Basilio Valdez - The Chief of Staff of the Philippine Army during World War II
  • Pilar Hidalgo-Lim - A prominent social worker, educator, and civic leader
  • Diomedes Maturan - Singer, known as Perry Como of the Philippines
  • Bernardo Bernardo - Comedian, actor, playwright, and director
Well how about that?!  Here are some good batchmates, who after exiting the portals of Manila High School, moved on and kind of fulfilled their dreams....
