Known as the Maya Heartland of the Mundo Maya World.  The original inhabitants, the Ancient Maya have a legacy that can be traced back to 1500 B.C.E.  The social evolution witnessed the European arrival in the early to mid 1600s and later arrival of enslaved African people in the early 1700s.  In the early 1800s the Gorinogu settlers from Honduras arrived in Belize after being exiled by the British from St. Vincent.  In 1862, Belize became an official British Colony and by 1871, Crown Colony up until 1964.  In 1973, the country's named was changed from British Honduras to Belize and on September 21, 1981, full independence was achieved.

Nestled near river banks, within the thick jungles or inches from the Caribbean Sea, ancient Maya structures are predominant features of Belize's terrain.  Altun Ha is located in northern Belize district, the site of the famous ancient Maya Jade Head discovery.
