ALT Travel: Burgos Spain

THE GRAND EUROPEAN PILGRIMAGE TOUR:
Tour 3 Continued:  Valladolid - Burgos, Spain

Burgos - Home of the third-largest and magnificent Gothic cathedral in Spain.  It took over three centuries to complete after King Ferdinand III and Mauricio ordered its construction, including a construction hiatus of almost 200 years.

Fr. Paul & Fr. Mel celebrating Holy Mass at Burgos Cathedral for our group.

The tomb of El Cid (real name: Rodrigo Diaz) and his wife Jemina. The Hollywood film "El Cid" was played by actors Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren.  El Cid never lost a war, 18 wars all, against the Moors. He also fought against Christians.

I'm assuming this pilgrim dude, resting in front of the Burgos Cathedral and  with the wooden cane walked all the way from the foot of the Pyrenees to Santiago de Campostella Compostela.

Mary Magdalene - Da Vinci Painting

For the first time, I had eggs! I don't know why but none of the hotels where I stayed had eggs for breakfast.  Is this part of how pilgrims live - eating hard bread and drink water all the time? Well, imagine that! Eggs as main dinner course at our Valladolid hotel. At home, I eat 6 eggs a day (2 sunny sideups, 2 scambled eggs with onions and tomatoes, and 2 hardboiled eggs).  I love eggs!

Dinner at our overnight stop in Valladolid.

                                                              Toro, symbol of Spain

The scenic plain of Spain.  Just fabulous weather all along and during the whole trip! Loverly!

  1. Camino de Santiago - THE WAY - The daughter of a friend and her husband just came back from Spain. They did the walk to Santiago de Compostela with a private guide to help them with the luggages and to cook their food. DO NOT WALK ALONE! The roads are sometimes rough and sometime smooth and even go up the mountain. Needless to say, they had foot blisters from walking. There are ATMs and vending machines along the way. The availability of baths maybe few so buy ready wear clothes from Target or cheap clothing stores in case of lost luggage. Famous people who did walk "The Way" was the actress Shirley MacLaine (60 minutes interview). And also People's magazine most beautiful woman 2013 Gwyneth Paltrow (PBS On The Road). Not the whole way to Santiago, I assumed. If they are not already there, the last week of July or the first week of August, 30 pilgrims from the Philippines are going to walk the way. Good luck to them.

  2. In Spain a few days ago, July 25 ?, there was a high-speed train crash on the way to Santiago de Compostela. 78 died. It's good Jodi's husband did not like riding the train when she suggested it.
