Exchange Visitor Priest From Uganda Sep 2009

Just look at this picture!  It's the newly constructed St. Joan of Arc School in Uganda - built by the generous support of parishioners of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Evanston/Skokie, Illinois and donations from big and small unknown contributors.  It all came to fruition due to the ministries of Fr. Simon Peter, who helps out at the church every summer and goes home to Uganda a week before the fall season.

Again, continued support is wanted for the school, such as building needs, reservoir water tank, preschool.nursery, scholarships, salaries for teachers and other school personnels.
My donation this year being a Culture Club bug hunter is for mosquito nets.  My father had malaria during World War II in the Philippines.  Malaria prevention for the folks in the Ugandan village is very, very important.  The cost per net is about $9.00 each depending on whether they are treated or untreated with insecticide.
Last year, I gave for unrestticted funds, specific needs that arise in the course of the year.  And the year before donation for a water well.  Many folks suffer and die of disease because of drinking unsafe water.  It costs $2,500 to dig one well.
Blankets are also needed. The cost is $10 each depending on the quality and volume purchased,
Last year, SJA Parish had fundraising and I bought 3 very beautiful necklaces hand-made by the Ugandan folks.

I also met Brother Thomas Taylor of the Augustinian Missions in northern Peru.  He's back there and thanked SJA Parish for our warm welcome and generous support.  Northern Peru was faced with severe drought, devastating floods, epidermic of cholera, poverty and hunger.  He said at the end of July, the people of Peru celebrated "Fiestas Patrias", their biggest national holiday.
