Manila News 2014

The long standing feud between the Aquino and Marcos families is not that simple to just reconcile, according to Malacanang Palace spokesman Herminio Coloma Jr.  It was in response to the attempt of Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to end the hostilities between the two.

US envoy to the Philippines Philip Goldberg was not convinced that the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has reached the Philippines - with the showing of Abu Sayyaf group video.  He said, "I would urge people to take all that (alleged involvement) with the grain of salt."

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is closely monitoring threat groups to ensure peace and order, especially with the upcoming visit of Pope Francis in early January 2015.

The influential Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) through Archbishop Socrates Villegas appealed to every Filipino to extend a hearty and warm welcome to Pope Francis.  Villegas said, "When Pope Francis comes, he will show us the face of God.  When the Pope sees us Filipinos, may he see the living God in us."

The family, mother Julita and sisters Marilou and Michelle, of slain transgender Jeffrey "Jennifer" Laude joined suits against the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), questioning the government's military agreement with the United States.  It was signed by officials of both countries last April.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the Philippines Monday, November 17, 2014.  He went to Lukban Elementary School in Paco, Manila and donated computers to the school.  He was the first Turkish premier to visit the Philippines.

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is always on top as one of the worst airports in the world.  Tourism advocate is seeking improvement of facilities for the safety of local and foreign air passengers in order to be internationally competitive.

Global Source, a respected think tank, made a forecast that the Philippine government's 7% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth will not be met due to continued drop in non-interest expenditures, expected severe power problems and continued congestion at the Port of Manila.  Hopes remain that the economy will outperform the 6.4% second quarter GDP growth rate in the next quarters.  Nevertheless, it goes to show the Philippines is no longer "the sick man of Asia."

The Philippines is expected to sustain accelerated growth and lead Southeast Asia in the next five years according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).  The OECD growth forecast for ASEAN-5:

Philippines   6.2%
Indonesia  6.0%
Vietnam   5.7%
Malaysia  5.6%
Thailand  4.1%

India, the world's third largest economy, intends to pursue measures that aim to enhance bilateral trade and investment ties with the Philippines.  India Ambassador to Manila Lalduhthlana Ralte said, "Trade and investment has not fully realized its potential."

Google is launching Public Alerts in the Philippines to make accurate and relevant alerts more accessible during typhoon season.  The Philippines is one of the most typhoon stricken countries in the world, with an average of  20 tropical storms making landfall each year, said Meryl Stone, head of Partnerships for Google Crisis Response.  Tools include Person Finder, Crisis Maps and storm path information.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather hoopla has been going on for the past several years - with roadblocks such as drug testing, purse sharing, personal grudges and other controversies.  Pacquiao, fresh from defending his championship belt against Algieri,  is willing to give a little bit  to make the negotiation start again.

Boxing Champ/Congressman/Movie Star Pacquiao, if asked by Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger to star with them in the film "Expendables" would be opened to the idea to join them in the big screen...if not "too busy."

Mineola Hotel Fox Lake Illinois

THE VILLAGE OF FOX LAKE, NORTHWEST OF CHICAGO, IS SITUATED AMONG THE CHAIN O' LAKES - PISTAKEE LAKE, NIPPERSINK LAKE AND FOX LAKE.  Many well-to-do Chicagoans built or bought  their summer homes, where swimming, boating, jet skiing, fishing, tubing and boarding are popular activities.  The current mayor is Donny Schmit.

WINTER SCENES

MINEOLA HOTEL   THE GRAND LADY OF THE LAKES

Mineola Hotel  Circa 1935

It was built in 1884 as a summer retreat and clubhouse by five wealthy businessmen and members of Chicago Board of Trade.  In 1901, it was sold to Edison C. Howard and remodeled into public hotel featuring 100 rooms, 79 of them for sleeping.  In a 1920 hotel registry the charge for room stay was $4 to $5.50 per night.  The largest wooden structure in Illinois, it measured 250 feet long and four-stories high on the side facing Fox Lake.  During prohibition, it was a favorite hideout of world-famous gangster Al Capone.  In 1943, Peter Jakstas, Sr., a beer truck driver, bought the Mineola Horel for $36,000.  Four generations of Jakstas Family privately own the iconic place.  In 1979, it was added to National Register of Historic Places.

In 2012, the bar and banquet hall, of what was left, closed due to a lawsuit to the Mr. Peter Jakstas, Jr. and family that cost the village $50,000.

Since I was around the neighborhood Thanksgiving Day, my friends and I went around to check on the historic building.  I said to myself, self, it's a bit dilapidated and need of a paint.  Fox Lake is a touristy summer place and this hotel should be preserved.  How?  Renovate and remodel: cut the size to 50 rooms, make it modern and boutique-looking.  Bring back the bar room and banquet hall seating to 100.  Maybe some slot machines?  The makeover should not cost that much?  Folks of the village would like to do a fundraising which is a big idea.  Call those big shots at the Chicago Board of Trade to give back again.  By next summer the hotel is as good as new.

Subject: Say Thank You
Try this from Xerox.

If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com/ , [LINK BROKEN]  you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.  You can’t pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.
How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!
This is a great site.
Please send a card.
It is FREE and it only takes a second.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these? Whether you are for or against the war, our guys and gals over there need to know we are behind them...

Wilhelm "Willy" BURGDORFER

HE DISCOVERED SPIROCHETES THAT CAUSES LYME DISEASE   The Swiss-born researcher  died of complications of Parkinson's disease in Hamilton, Montana on Monday, November 17, 2014.  He was born June 27, 1925, in Basel, Switzerland, and received doctorates in zoology, parasitology, and bacteriology.  He moved to the United States, went to Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Hamilton as a research fellow in 1951 and joined the staff  as a medical entomologist six years later.  He became an American citizen in 1957.

He spent decades researching the connections between animal and human diseases caused by the bites of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes.  In 1982, while he and another researcher were studying deer ticks in hopes of uncovering the cause of spotted fever outbreak in New York, Burgdorfer found the microorganisms called spirochetes of the Genus Borrelia that would prove to be the cause of Lyme disease.  His previous work on relapsing fever helped him recognize the cause of Lyme disease and called his most famous discovery "serendipity."  The spirochete  later was named Borrelia burgdorferi after him.

Huh! Something's wrong with the fluorescent microscope

The infection cause children living near Lyme, Connecticut, to develop rheumatoid arthritis.  Even former President George W. Bush had the Lyme disease (probably while studying at Yale U at the time and had bitten by a deer tick?).  It also causes heart and neurological problems.  Burgdorfer' research opened doors to diagnosis and treatment of the disease, said colleague and friend Dr. Tom Schwan.

Robert Koch Gold Medal

He retired in 1986 after authoring more than 225 scientific papers and traveling the world giving lectures and working with fellow scientists.  He won numerous awards, including the Robert Koch Gold Medal for excellence in biomedical sciences in 1988, and received an honorary degree from University of Marseille in France in 1991.

Nymphal and adult deer ticks can be carriers of Lyme Disease.  Lyme Disease was named after the town of Lyme in Connecticut where a number of cases were associated in 1975.  However, it was not until 1981 that this tick-borne disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (named after Willy Burgdorfer).

Subject:Tick Removal
A nurse discovered a safe, easy way to remove ticks where they automatically withdraw themselves when you follow her simple instructions. Read this one as it could save you from some major problems.

                           Tick Removal:
Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing their heads. Here is a good way to get them off you, your children, or your pets. Give it a try.
Please forward to anyone with children, hunters or dogs; or anyone who even steps outside in summer!  A School Nurse has written the info below--good enough to share--and it really works!

"I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick.  This is great because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc."
"Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20); the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.  This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me."  "Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!"
Please pass on. Everyone needs this helpful hint.

The list of Registered Members at the website is for the current fiscal year (7/1/06 - 6/30/07).  In Sofia's membership application form the box for next fiscal year was checked (7/1/07-6/30/08). I will do the list of next fiscal year's Registered Members at the website when I come back after the Reunion in June.

You won't find Sofia's name either in this year's Souvenir Program's Directory for the Reunion this June. The names in the directory are for current fiscal year's registered members (free listings) and those non registered members who paid the directory listing fee of $20 if attending, or $25 if not attending (we will mail them their souvenir programs).

By the way we will be assigning tables like last year. I will try to group attendees by:

First: the year they graduated.

Second: with whom they want to seat with (they have to let me know when they send in their reservations).

Third: On a first come first serve basis. I  note down the dates when we received reservation payments.  Those who paid first gets  tables nearer the dance floor. Jubilarians get tables closer to the dance floor and stage.

Thanks for all your help, God bless you.

Warm regards

Mrs. G.

Quite ironic, it's NEWSWEEK hitting the road not Obama.  It goes to show that in America everything is possible.  Emperor Obama is a true testament to that.

I  AM
FURIOUS As a Foreign Born Observer and an American, the SOBs in
the mainstream media are in maximum force in attacking President Bush
and his administration.  Since the beginning they have been saying "Bush is
the one to blame"  from every little thing and everything.  Well, no
surprise.  Bleeding heart liberals, opportunistic politicians,
environmental wackos and media Bush-haters are in full-attack mode and
doing what they do best - grandstanding, selling newspapers, fueling the fire of
hatred, that heads have to be chopped of - but doing nothing except talk,
talk, talk.  Of all people, they should know the Federal Government will
always be mired in bureaucracy.  Help will always be there but will always
take time.  After all it's a large nation of 50 states.  That's why
living in a democratic society is not always perfect but nevertheless in my
opinion still far better than dictatorship.

For these SOBs to
point the faulty finger of fate on President Bush and ignoring the lack of
leadership, incompetence and foresight by the mayor, aldermen and governor
of Louisiana is being unreasonable and stupid.  Where are all these people
who's supposed to be in charge in the Superdome and Convention
Center?  They should be leading, rallying, giving comfort and
praying with the people.  I may never know what actually happen for in
interviews they are already covering their butt.  But this I know,,, I
understand my first responsibility is  always to myself.  I think and
plan for myself for the moment.  That I cannot always depend on the Federal
Government.  The people is the government.  I am the
government.  I also know as long as help is coming I will not lose
hope.

The SOBs in the media who are protecting the
looters are wrong.  These people are nothing but the scum of the
earth.

When I was in New
Orleans vacationing with my family (Hi Manong, Marilou and Nanay) we went to the
train station after having coffee and delicious hot beignet at Café Du Monde ( I
was watching Chicago CBS 2 Morning TV News Saturday - the café is gone).
Why on August 29, Monday, the responsible city officials did not bring the sick
and the big fat people (I've never seen so many fat people in my whole
life) and the poor who don't have cars, were not brought to the train
station and transported to other states - Georgia, Tennessee, Chicago and
wherever the train is passing.  Hitler made so much use of
trains.   Bussing small number of people costs so much
gas.  In time of trouble the separation of states should be waived and
governors should help one another.

That's why the great
State of Texas should be commended and praised to the highest heaven for helping
the 220,000 evacuees of Louisiana.

I've asked this
question before - why are the citizens of big urban cities always re-electing
Democrats?  Maybe if they would vote Republicans things will be
better.  It should also be recognized that many ordinary people tried in
their own little way to help those in need.

Now the mainstream media is perpetrating the
racial issue.  Why are there so many poor Black Americans?  This
should be asked to the Black leaders and politicians of the community.
When the Vietnamese boat people came to America they had nothing but clothes in
their back.  But they worked so hard and with little welfare checks from
the US government (I knew a little about them because my uncle used to work in
the City of Los Angeles) they pulled all their resources and improved their way
of life.  Now, they have many small Vietnamese communities in Houston,
Chicago and other major cities.  Something is wrong here.  Wherever I
go, be it to the urban city government offices, I mostly see Black
employees.  The American educational systems for the poor
Blacks and Whites are more than better (computers, books, school
supplies) and far higher in standards than the rest of the Third World
including the Philippines.

Having been born and
raised in the little country of the Philippines, I had my share of little
catastrophe and bad luck - my family home being on low ground was
constantly flooded from all-year round battering of typhoons and mild (if there
is such a thing) earthquake.  One time, I was walking near the
sidewalk and suddenly went down a manhole because I did not see through the
dark muddy water.  Big things happen to big countries such as the United
States.

My dear relatives and friends all over the
United States, it's a known fact I don't like the mainstream media.  Thanks
to you because you are so well-informed by their bias, name calling and
lies, they have not succeeded and we have re-elected President Bush for
two-terms.  Also, for your information for I know you're busy
working,  I have ripped the following from the pages of Bill Sammon's book
"Misunderstimated" and of course my own -

  • New York Time liberal editor Howell Raines
who actively worked against the war in Iraq was fired in the Jayson Blair
    plagiarism scandal.

  • Peter Arnett, NBC correspondent, was also dismissed in
    disgrace.

  • CNN top executive Eason Jordan who covered up Saddam
Hussein's crimes continued to lose market share to FOX.

  • BBC was forced to apologize after the Lord Hutton Report
on "sexed up" prewar intelligence on Iraq.  Reporter Andrew Gilligan, BBC
Editor-in-Chief, Greg Dyke and Chairman of the Board of Governors, Gavyn
    Davies.

  • Helen Thomas (Grand Duchess and almost senile mother of
the press corps) lost her front row seat in the White House.

  • Dan Rather of CBS and heir to the Cronkite throne was
removed from his anchor chair and relegated to being just a reporter in 60
Minutes out of pity and consideration for his long and dedicated
    service.

  • Extreme liberal and lying newspapers like NY Times,
Newsweek, LA Times, Washington Post and Chicago Tribune are losing market
    shares to computers and radios.

Owe nothing to anyone, except love one
another.

IRAN THAT YOU DON'T SEE
With all the headlines about the Islamic Republic of Iran, time stood still for me since the ousting of the Shah of Iran from the Peacock Throne and his beautiful wife Queen Farah Diva.  Like anywhere else, progress moves on and voila, everything becomes upscale and modern. I saw more about Iran when Rick Steves, famous for his travel series on PBS TV, left Europe temporarily and da-do-run-run inside Iran.  I was not surprised at all to see a statue of the Virgin Mary.  I attended with ALT PRO Mila a short talk by a Christian missionary that you are allowed to spread Christian faith in Iran.  I have to check if there's still an American University in Tehran after the 1979 revolution? Dumb question.Probably not.
