Filipino Architect Rafael Nelson Aboganda

Rafael Nelson Aboganda
AT THE ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN NEW YORK THERE'S AN AMAZING STAIRCASE DESIGNED BY FILIPINO ARCHITECT RAFAEL NELSON ABOGANDA.  It was built in 1968 at the Frank B. Gannett building of the institute.  Many students and visitors know about this amazing staircase but just seen now in the video uploaded last April 30, 2013.

It is called the Escherian Stairwell, named after the Dutch artist M.C. Escher:

The "impossible" staircase was created by Lionel Penrose and his son Roger.  The Penrose Triangle is a two-dimentional depiction of a staircase in which the stairs make four 90 degree turns as they ascend or descend  forming a continuous loop.

How fortuitous! There was this most excellent 2-hour PBS documentary (The Learning) that I saw last Tuesday, September 20, 10 o'clock CST.  It was from Point of View (POV) show, not from Independent Lens as I'd previously and erroneously mentioned, about the year long teaching jobs and experiences of teachers who came to Maryland from different provinces in the Philippines.  The documentary by Ramona S. Diaz was very impressive and in my opinion should be given a documentary award.  Like her, I did not know the United States was hiring teachers from the Philippines a few years ago.  Like her, I was very surprised because there are so many teachers here who are looking for jobs.  I'm assuming some, if not all, don't want to teach in inner-city public schools where kids are rowdy, disrespectful and wild.  As you know, teachers in the Philippines are very well respected and used to being called "Sir" and "Ma'am." To date, there are 600 Filipino teachers in Maryland school systems.

@ Kangaroo Tim

This is the beauty of being Filipino.  The main export of the Philippines is the hardworking Filipino.  In the 60s,70s, and 80s Filipino medical professionals and engineers immigrated to the United States and they were welcomed with open arms.  Others went to Europe, Canada and Australia.  In the 80s and 90s, Filipino skilled (teachers, engineers, artists)and non-skilled workers (carpenters, performers, domestic helpers, cruise ships attendants), better known as OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) went in droves to find jobs in other Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea)and the Middle East (Israel, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Jordan, Libya), stayed there according to their working visas and sending much needed remittance to their needy family and relatives in their hometown.

Get out of the way -- Filipinos are unstoppable!
