NEW SOUTH CHINA MALL, LIVING CITY - IN DUNGGUAN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE - FOUNDED 2005. It's the world's largest shopping mall based on gross leasing area and second in rank to the Dubai Mall in total area. The project was spearheaded by Alex Hu, the instant noodle billionaire. The mall is owned by Sanyuan Yinghui Investment and Development, Hu Guirong's Company and the controlling interest sold to Founders Group division of Beijing University. It has been 99% vacant since its opening in 2005 with few local and international merchants signing up in the 2,350 store spaces. It's now known as a "ghost" mall. This is most surprising because the population of Dungguan is more than 10 million and China's overall population is 1.3 billion ?. Other reasons why it's not a popular destination are there are no nearby airport and highways and it can only be reached by car and bus. I don't get this - people drive anyway and bussed in groups to places they want to go and play. Horseshoe Casino in Indiana USA provide roundtrip free bus to casino players. However, there are some ways to make the mall a living, breathing city: convert part of the place to a hotel and convention center, entertainment center and home to China's Acrobats, wedding and party amenities, food courts, symphony, as movie set, university annex, muppets show, international singers and actors, beauty contests, gambling casino etc...etc... The list is endless. Borrow money from the Bank of China and build the highways if need be. If you build it, they will come. I don't get what's the problem.

South China Mall is a city within a city. It turned out the place of Guangdong is where all of China's millionaires came from. It is China's most wealthiest province, the biggest exporter and importer of goods. One of its flaws is it's hard to reach - it takes more than two hours for a 6-mile drive! Hard to believe. Other reasons are: Dungguan is a factory town and the folks are mostly migrant workers. How many are there that they should affect the viability of the place? Ask these workers what they do for fun on weekends? Build a temporary or place for their visiting family. What about the combined population of more than 20 million people? What do they do for leisure and pleasure? In the Philippines the big malls (no. 3 as world's biggest mall) are always full (good place to cool off), always eating but not buying much.
Anyway, SCM needs a visit from feng-shui, reinvention, and redesigning.

How about that?! I looked at the world map where's South China Mall that's located close to nearby big city of Guangzhou and saw it to be closed to HONGKONG. This should be included as tourist destination in tour of HONGKONG. I'm just amazed the mall was not a success. What a shame because the place is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIn the future when I go to Hongkong I'll surely visit the South China mall.
