October is Filipino American History Month (FAHM) 2011

FILIPINO AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH [FAHM] IN SKOKIE, ILLINOIS

House Resolution 780 was passed by US Congress on November 2, 2009. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn cited in his proclamation the earliest arrival of a Filipino on what would be part of American soil in Louisiana on October 18, 1587 when members of the crew of Nuestra Senora de Esperanza (Our Lady of Hope) jumped ship and settled in what would eventually be now New Orleans. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen (aka History Teacher) both proclaimed October as Filipino American History Month also. L-R: Philippine Deputy Consul General Orontes Castro, Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen, Phil-Asst. Secretary of Education Tonisito M.C. Umali, FAHM Lead Coordinator Angeles "Jelly" Carandang, Mrs. Enriqueta Cirera, and Dr. Ramon Lopez, a descendant of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

The emphasis on this year's event is the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines, who as a world traveler visited the US from late April to mid May of 1888. He began his American journey from San Francisco, with a 14-hour stopover in the City of Chicago on May 11 and sailed for London when he reached New York. Copies of the original manuscripts of his two novels - "NOLI ME TANGERE" and "EL FILIBUSTERISMO" along with copies of "REMEMBERING RIZAL" - a commemorative anthology published last June have been given to Skokie Public Library as part of the celebration.

Dr. Ramon Lopez and Mariano "Mang Anong" Santos, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of PINOY, The Filipino American Newsmagazine, proudly showing the books (Available on Amazon).
