ON JULY 2, 2013, THE CARDINALS AND ARCHBISHOPS WHO ARE MEMBERS OF THE CONGREGATION FOR SAINTS MET TO ADVANCE THE SAINTHOOD CAUSES OF BLESSEDS JOHN PAUL II AND JOHN XX111.  The Vatican press confirmed the meeting.  The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the cardinals approved the miracle needed for Blessed John Paul's canonization.  The canonization would be scheduled after Pope Francis approves the publication of a decree recognizing the miracle and after he consults with members of the College of Cardinals.  Dates of canonization under discussion were November or December, or even spring of 2014.  The idea would be to canonize the two popes at the same ceremony.

Blessed John XXIII
Before he became pope,  Cardinal Karol Wojtyla of Poland (future Pope John Paul II) recorded and sung Ave Maria in 1976.  His great devotion to the Virgin Mary was very much reflected in his beautiful singing.  He sung with deep love and veneration.  Wonderful voice.  You're going to cry when you hear it!   It was featured on Life On The Rock.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou3o7oE2vyc

AVE MARIA

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei
ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen

Blessed John Paul II

After our early breakfast at Hotel Midas in the outskirt near Rome, we got ready for our bus ride to Vatican City.   We arrived around 8:00 am.

St. Peter's Basilica: It is the largest Christian church in the world.  The building was begun in 1506 over the crypt or tomb, believed to contain the body of St. Peter, the first pope.  The crypt is part of an earlier church built by Constantine the Great between 323 and 326.  Ten architects worked on the church -- the first was Donato Bramante.  The most famous was Michaelangelo Buonarroti, who took charge in 1547, and continued for 18 years.  The building was dedicated by Pope Urban VIII in 1626.
Shorts are not allowed and bare shoulders must be covered or wear long sleeves in all the Roman Catholic churches in Rome.

In front of the church is a large open space - the Piazza di San Pietro - which has covered collonades on each side.  In the center stands a red granite 85 feet high Obelisk. It was brought from Egypt in the 100's and was moved to the Piazza until the 1500's.  The total cost of building the church then was about $50 million.  Over $30,000 is spent each year to repair and maintenance, but due to inflation now cost $90,000 (?).

The church's floor plan is in the shape of a cross.  The entire lenght is 700 feet, at the widest part measures 450 feet.  The great hall or nave is 150 feet high.

The dome designed by Michaelangelo rises over 400 feet and is 138 feet across.  One can climb inside the curve of the dome to the upper cupola and the cross.

The inside of the church is richly decorated with marble, mosaic, gilding, Chapels, many side altars (Mass said every hour by a priest), and tombs line the walls.

Saint Helena

Only the pope, or a cardinal representing him, is permitted to celebrate Mass at the high altar.  Underneath the altar is a  95 feet high great bronze canopy, designed by Giovanni Bernini.
