Bonsai Trees

A BONSAI IS A DWARFED, ORNAMENTALLY-SHAPED  TREE OR SHRUB  IN A SHALLOW POT.  Every office should have a bonsai.  My bonsais of pomegranate, Harland boxwood and cryptomeria are growing nicely and I water them every other day.

WHAT DO CHEFS MAKE WHEN THEY ARE BORED?  THEY DO THESE...

It happened one beautiful and peaceful Sunday afternoon on the first week of June.  One of the Angelic McCainiacs and former lab tech co-worker of two of the Tres Amigas, Susan and Sofie, is visiting Chicago with her hubby Rudy from Scottsdale, AZ.

Amiga Susan was treating all of us for an evening of chow at the popular Japanese restaurant TSUKASA OF TOKYO.  561 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills, IL  60651    847-816-8770

I said, I love crispy tempura plate for my palate.  I never liked sushi but I always order beef and chicken teriyaki and sukiyaki.  Yummy!

So we all drove in our SUVs to the chow place.  It's a short drive to Mundelein.  Mundelein on my mind is famous for Catholic seminary and school for visiting priests from other countries.
Susan who's treating us already made the reservation.  The place was jampacked with anniversary celebrants, newly graduates, and just plain hungry folks like us.  We waited about 20 minutes or so.

Sub-Chef Tsukasa put on a foodtastic show for us in how he's going to prepare our orders.  First he put everything on fire.  Whoa!  Burn, baby, burn!  Then, he cracked eggs to make scramble for the fried rice by playing like a ping-pong.  PiloSofia, Susan and Gerry, all of us in front of him, including Mr. & Mrs. Turban, were all full of admiration.  Wow!

Don't try this at home.  Are you ready for the explosion?  Shock and awe with our volcanic onions.

I said to Sub-Chef Tsukasa, never ever remove the fat on my juicy steak!  My mouth and nose just loved the smell.

What a show at TSUKASA!

Las Vegas Fight

A DAY OF RECKONING FOR UNDEFEATED BOXING CHAMPION FLOYD MAYWEATHER (47-0) AND HIS "MONEY TEAM" VERSUS THE "MANNY TEAM."

Manny Pacquiao, the National Fist of the Philippines, arrived in Las Vegas Wednesday, April 29, with his entourage in the Manny Pacquiao private plane lent by his avid fans and sponsors.  Mayweather  is probably shaking in his gloves - I've read Pacquiao's left hooks are deadly.  I said to myself, self, American boxing icon of all-time Rocky Marciano (49-0) is looking down from heaven and giving his blessings to Pacquiao.

For sure, there will be a re-match in the future because Mayweather is going to lose to Pacquiao Saturday night.  No jinx!

I'll be in Las Vegas just as an "observer" of the fight as the ticket price is from $1,000 to $6,500.  The "weight in" is only $10.

 Hail to the
Chef

 By Jose Antonio Vargas

 She's come a long, long,
long way, this former hotel "salad girl." Before she was hired as an assistant
chef in the White House in 1995, before first lady Laura Bush promoted her to
White House executive chef last week, Cristeta Comerford -- "Cris" to her
neighbors and co-workers here in the Washington area, "Teta" to her large but
tight-knit Filipino family in the Chicago suburb of Morton Grove -- was in
charge of a salad bar.

"That's what I called her, 'salad girl.' She
prepared Caesar salad, Cobb salad," says Juanito Pasia, Cristeta's older
brother, trying not to laugh. It was Juanito who drove Teta -- then 23, newly
arrived from the Philippines -- in his blue Ford van to and from work at a
Sheraton Hotel near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. "Can you believe
it?" he asks, giving another hearty laugh. "Can you believe this is
happening?"

Ask the people who have worked alongside the
42-year-old Comerford around the world, whether in Chicago, Vienna or
Washington, and the answer seems to be a definitive yes. Her new position as the
White House's top toque -- a uniquely high-profile and sought-after celebrity
chef job -- is an affirmation, her former bosses and co-workers say, of the hard
work, focus, imperturbable demeanor and culinary talent she has shown in the
kitchen.

"Over and over and over again," says Walter Scheib III,
who as the former executive chef -- hired by Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1994,
then asked to resign by Laura Bush earlier this year -- lured Comerford to join
the White House kitchen staff in 1995. In the subsequent years, he adds, he
considered her not so much his assistant chef as his "co-chef." "She's an
all-around great chef, no question about it. Let me put it to you this way: In
the years that I've worked with her, there's been so many dishes she's made for
me, and I cannot think of anything she did that wasn't
good."

Comerford, who lives in a two-story Colonial-style home in
Columbia with her husband, John, and their 4-year-old daughter, Danielle,
declined to be interviewed for this article. The White House is planning a
"press event" in the first week of September to accommodate the hundreds of
requests -- "more than 500 so far and counting," says an overwhelmed Susan
Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary -- to interview Comerford (who, the very
moment she made headlines, left for an already-planned weeklong family vacation
to Cancun, Mexico).

"White House taps 1st woman, minority as head
chef," read a headline in USA Today.

 "Her résumé reads like a
classic American success story," read an editorial in the Chicago
Tribune.

The popular comedic news program "The Daily Show" weighed
in, with faux senior presidential correspondent Stephen Colbert reporting that
Comerford faces a tough confirmation battle (she doesn't, of course) because she
once deemed curried yams "too ethnic" (dubious, but funny).

 * *
*

Cristeta Comerford is the second youngest of 11 children, with
six half brothers, one half sister and three full sisters. Everyone was everyone
else's babysitter.

Born in October 1962 in Manila, she was raised
in a working-class neighborhood of Sampaloc, near the sprawling campus of the
University of Santo Tomas, a Catholic school founded in 1611. Honesto Pasia, her
father, was an elementary school principal; Erlinda Pasia, her mother, was a
dressmaker. "So driven," says Cristeta's older sister, Ofelia Aguila, a design
director for the College of American Pathologists. "So
ambitious."

Erlinda, who's 78 and lives with Ofelia and her family
in Morton Grove, a 20-minute drive from downtown Chicago, has only one word to
describe her Teta: " Napakabait. " That means "very kind" in Tagalog, the
dominant native language in the Philippines.

 " Tuwang tuwa ang
boong pamilia para sa kanya," says Erlinda. ("The family is very, very happy for
her.")

"I could feel within my heart that joy that is kind of just
overflowing," says Ofelia, recalling Teta's phone call telling her about the
promotion. "Then I thought of my dad. Oh, if he were still alive!" Honesto died
more than 10 years ago, before Teta started working in the White House. "He
would have been very, very excited over this."

 The Pasia daughters
grew up in a house of food, with Erlinda as the perfectionist, hard-to-please
head chef. "It's either overcooked or too salty, she would say. Too little this
and too much that," says Ofelia. It was rare for the family to eat
out.

Filipino cuisine is determinedly eclectic, a mix of Chinese,
Japanese and Spanish influence. Erlinda can whip out a classic chicken adobo, a
kind of stew, or pancit canton, a kind of noodle dish, or lumpia Shanghai, the
Filipino egg roll, all staples of any Filipino party, not so much "by formula,"
says Ofelia, but "by instinct." The mother passed that gift on to her
daughters.

Encouraged by her family, Comerford studied food. She
attended the University of the Philippines-Diliman, in Quezon City, and majored
in food technology. Contrary to a news release issued by the White House,
though, she didn't complete her degree. Juanito, an accountant and the first in
the family to move to the States, had petitioned his parents, brothers and
sisters to let her join him there, and Comerford opted to leave school when her
visa was approved.

After stints at the Sheraton and Hyatt Regency
hotels near Chicago O'Hare, Cristeta, with her husband, who's also a chef, moved
here. She was a chef at two Washington restaurants -- Le Grande Bistro at the
Westin Hotel and the Colonnade at the former ANA Hotel. For six months, she
worked as chef tournant ("revolving chef") at Le Ciel, in Vienna, Austria,
sharpening her mastery of French classical techniques. Scheib, then the
executive chef at the White House, recruited her.

 "As a chef, you
need a certain feeling, a certain way of putting food together, not just cooking
it but presenting it. It's hard to describe, but she has that feeling," says
Siegfried Pucher, her former boss at Le Ciel.

 In her 10 years at
the White House, however, her specialty has been ethnic and American cuisine.
What pleased the first lady is the way Comerford can more than satisfy the
president with a lunch of enchilada or cheeseburger, then turn around to cook a
state dinner that pairs chilled asparagus soup and lemon cream with pan-roasted
halibut and basmati rice (with pistachio nuts and currants). In fact, the dinner
for 134 guests held last month in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
won Comerford the job.

"For those back home in the Philippines, and
for the Filipinos who are working immigrants and naturalized citizens all over
the world -- and there are millions of us -- she is this wonderful, wonderful
example," says Greg Macabenta, a columnist for the Manila Times who lives in
California.

The Filipino population in the United States, according
to Census Bureau figures, hovers around 2.4 million, with almost half residing
in California. The New Jersey/New York area, as well as Hawaii, have substantial
Filipino populations, followed by the Chicago and Washington metropolitan
areas.

"She's one of our own, she's doing very well, and we share
in the pride," Macabenta says. "We want to tell our children, 'Hey look, don't
believe that canard about the glass ceiling in the United States. You can be as
good as the best of them in the world.' "

America the Great Satan

LESS WE FORGET,  IRAN  IS AN ENEMY AND THE ONLY COUNTRY ON EARTH CALLING AMERICA THE GREAT SATAN AND THE IRANIAN PEOPLE SHOUTING DEATH TO AMERICA.  Should economic sanctions of Iran be lifted by the Obama Administration?  Do not be a fool!  Former President George W. Bush said on Sunday, April 26, that he's against on the lifting of Iranian sanctions.  If Iran becomes a nuclear power, the whole of the Middle East, that is Israel, including Europe, will be wiped-out.

Remember what happened during the Carter Administration on November 4, 1979?  The US Embassy was overtaken by student protesters, ransacked  and American hostages taken for no reason, including a priest.

I SHALL RETURN

THIS IS SO UNBELIEVABLE!  It does not make sense that China would claim the Spratly Islands, Scarborough Shoal, Paracel Islands to be her own when Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei are much closer and the closest to the contested Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal is the Philippines.  Just because the islands are located in South China Sea, it does not mean these islands belong to China.  The Philippines to spite China renamed it West Philippine Sea.  Something is very wrong - take a look at this Google earth map - how far China is:

The Philippine government should go to the United Nations General Assembly and protest China's illegal grabbing of these islands.

THE U.S. AND PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENTS SIGNED A NEW DEFENSE COOPERATION MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2014.  U.S. Ambassador Philip Goldberg signed the accord with the Philippines' defense minister, Voltaire Gazmin, early Monday before Obama's arrival in Manila - the last destination of his Asian visits to Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Following in the footsteps of Douglas MacArthur (kind of), it's the first large-scale return of American military forces to the Philippines since being kicked out by Congress in the early 1990s.  The Philippine Senate rejected an extension of a long-standing base Laurel-Langley agreement and forced Washington to close Clark Air Force Base and Subic Bay Naval Base, Pentagon's largest overseas facilities.  The Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) can take effect without approval by the Philippine Senate.  The accord will allow U.S. troops, warships and aircraft to operate from Philippine military bases and training camps on a rotating basis.  Portions of installations will be refurbished and used to pre-position U.S. supplies and equipment in the event of regional crises or humanitarian disasters.  In using Philippine bases, the Pentagon is eyeing a return to Thailand and Vietnam to bolster allies nervous about China's military expansion in the South China Sea  and island disputes with her neighbors.  Leftist groups in Manila accused Washington of interfering in local affairs and blamed the U.S. of the island nation's post-colonial troubles, widespread poverty and decades of political repression.  Once again, "blame the other guy for all your troubles."

Dear Kangaroo Tim Down Under,

Counter Point to:

1.  Whether you like it or not, China is underway on its oil exploration of Spratly Islands.  The future earnings to be divided between the Philippines and China would not do because of other countries involved -- Malaysia and Vietnam.  They would have liked to have a piece of the pie also.

2.  Business is business.  Boycott is not the solution to a diplomatic or political problem.  Although in America consumer boycotting works against big business and corporation. When blacks boycott your company you better be prepared to suffer the consequences.  Blacks in America get a free pass to everything because it's past due payment to years of discrimination and slavery.

If he said it, I don't agree to the statement of Russian Premier Vladimir Putin that America is an "economic parasite."  Being a red-blooded Communist, he is just  a capitalist assassin in my book of world leaders.  The definition of a parasite in my Webster is "someone who eats at the expense of others."  America is the most giving of foreign aids and most humanitarian in time of crises and disasters, natural and nuclear.  In fact, America being so rich with so many things, economic or otherwise, only eats her own for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Wherever there's a catastrophe, America is there.

People or nations, powerful or big power-to-be, who call America a bully are suffering from inferiority complex.   It's an over rated word.  It's not a superpower's problem if such nation thought to have been bullied.  Their leaders have a mind of their own and it's just too bad if they've been suckered to a bad term and agreement.  As far as I know every trade agreement in the past had been discussed and etched in writing in accordance to what had been dictated and agreed by both parties.

China maybe a power to be reckoned with but what nation isn't?  It will go bust sooner or later because of inflation.  What goes up must come down.  China be warned or else ally Mr. Putin will call China an "economic parasite" also.

Not to sound like Marie Antoinette, it's just too bad that in any war or uprising, poor and innocent civilians are always the other unavoidable casualties.

Uncle Sam is no bully.

hi Ate Lib, here are two most effective ways if Plan A failed:

1. Plan B : Let China be a part of oil exploration and be the financier then  once the oil drilling comes to effect the earnings should be divided between Philippines and China .

2. If Plan A & Plan B failed then the best thing to do is to boycott all Chinese products, the question is would Americans be sincere and ready to boycott Chinese products?

The Russian Vladimir Putin just recently said that America is an economic parasite, do you agree with his statement?

If the US Forces return to the Philippine soil is true then this is very dangerous because China is now a big force to reckon with. The US can no longer bully China at this time. That's reality.

Better solve the dispute peacefully to avoid loss of lives especially the innocent civilians who are always victims of political blunder.

Have a good weekend my friend and take care.

Hello Kangaroo Tim Down Under,

I agree solving any problem, national or foreign, through diplomatic channel is very important and must be the first  and utmost consideration.  Being knowledgeable with what's going on with the Spratlys dispute and other current issues, I'm sure you've read what happened to some Vietnamese killed by the Chinese.  If there is such thing as Plan B, most of the time not executed because of Plan A, the return of U.S. Forces in the Philippines should be considered and be part of Plan B.  I'm quite sure the issues you mentioned would be discussed by Philippine officials and the U.S. military and designated envoys.  I think possible "crimes" such as rapes and sexual molestations committed by U.S. soldiers outside the base should be reviewed in case by case basis and should not be sensationalized.  U.S. soldiers are American citizens and they should be protected until proven innocent or not guilty.  After all, the Philippines is a democracy, a friendly nation of laws and jurisprudence, unlike godless North Korea or Iran where anyone is branded guilty and put in jail right away as spies.  A U.S. base in the Philippines is not a hostile act but a protection act, supporting a "David" with rag-a-tag weapons against a "Goliath" China with massive military power.

My favorite President of all-time Ronald Reagan many times said, "Peace through strength."

hi Ate Lib , the members of ASEAN and China are trying to solve the Spratly's Island issue in diplomatic way and not through arm confrontation.

If the US bases will be established again in the Philippines there must be a clear agreement for the rental of the land, any crime committed by US enlisted men outside the US Base jurisdiction must be tried under the Philippine Laws and if found guilty beyond reasonable doubt then the guilty one should be locked in Philippine Jail.

There is an existing Defense Treaty between the Philippines and USA but the wording is not clear because the treaty said that US will defend the Philippines if the attack came from the Pacific. The Spratly Islands are small cluster of land situated near Palawan which is in the Philippine West Sea or bottom part of China Sea in short this is not in the Pacific.

Establishing a US Base in the Philippine will provoke anger from China, North Korea and ASEAN members. This will be a hostile issue.

Remember PEACE, LOVE  and no WAR.

This is the humble opinion of Kangaroo Tim

There's must be a change of plan because of the earthquake/tsunami in Japan.  The U.S. military is moving out of Japan and planning to move in in the U.S. territory of Guam.  Senior Senators Daniel Inouye of Hawaii and Thad Cochran of Mississippi were on a secret fact-finding mission in freeport Subic Bay.  The Philippines kicked out the U.S. forces in both bases of Subic Bay and Clark in 1994 which was hastened by the destructive force of Mt. Pinatubo burying the AFB and the surrounding town like ancient Pompeii.  Funny, I remember very well, of all things, among the survivors was a pink pig being led by a little girl.  Okedoke.  Are you in favor of the return of U.S. Forces?  As you know, there are some Filipino never-do-well who are always protesting that the Philippines is a puppet of the U.S. Government.  Because of the Spratly Islands dispute with China,  the Philippine Congress may say yes and welcome the possibility of the return of Uncle Sam.

Subject: RETURN OF U.S. FORCES TO SUBIC

DEAR FRIENDS: YOUR PARTICIPATION IS REQUESTED!

I was born and raised in the Philippines and now a US citizen.

The news from the Philippine Daily Inquirer about the trip of US Senators Daniel Inouye and Thad Cochran plus the recent

visit of the US Ambassador to the Philippines to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Subic , for the possible return of US Forces  prompted me to write this appeal. This is a request for your participation by way of sending this information to your family, your friends and copy furnished myself, because I will forward thousands of signatories that I have gathered to the Philippine Congress and Senate for appropriate action. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CIRCULATE THIS APPEAL.

The recent intrusion of China to our shores and the economic impact are enough reasons to invite back the US Forces to Subic Bay. The global security and the special bond of friendship between our two nations can not be overlooked by our Philippine leaders. We have nurtured the partnership and this is the opportunity to improve the plight of our less privileged kababayans

especially in the countryside. If we are blessed here, this simple act of responding to my appeal is  bringing hope to the poor. We are counting on you and they are counting on us for help. Let us seize this opportunity and lift a finger to improve

the country. Please remember- " Ang sakit ng kalingkingan ay damdam ng buong katawan and Kung hindi ngayon kailan pa?"

Secondly, consider our meager military and defense capabilities. We need a strong partner to defend "Lupang Hinirang".  Subic offers our best assets to support the return of US Forces because Subic has world class workers. Many of them are now in the US and we can entice them to go back. Most of us sends financial support to our relatives especially in times of need and calamities. They need us more than ever and to partner with US Forces- they might find hope before its too late. Hope is within our reach if you  and I will do something. Further, "walang nabubuhay para sa sarili lamang dahil tayong lahat ay may pananagutan sa isa't

isa." Please contribute your email  because it is very important to them and to me. Please send this back to me and in turn I will forward it to the leadership in the Philippines. Thank you and may you be blessed a hundredfold. Sincerely, Ernie E. Tawatao, SecGen,CCAA-USA COUNCIL at: tongtawatao@yahoo.com.

DR OZ on eating fruit

WHY ARE 10 DOCTORS CRITICIZING DR. MEHMET OZ AND WANTED HIM OUSTED FROM COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY?    At the latest 1,000 doctors joined in calling him names.  A friend of mine who's a big fan of Dr. Oz and watches his show all the time said these doctors are just jealous of his success and popularity.  How can he be a quack when he's the vice-chairman of cardiothoracic department at Columbia University?  No one attains that high position with less than excellent academic qualifications.   All these doctors are ganging up on Dr. Oz  just because he's not into genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and whatever he's talking about .  I'm glad Dr. Oz is hitting back.  In America, if you don't like something you can always speak what's on your mind and better still if you are in a good position such as having a popular show of your own.  Dr. Oz defended what he's doing as "Freedom of Speech."   My calling global warming or climate change as an environmental hoax is a freedom of speech.  Nobody cares what I say, what I think on the matter, because I'm not a popular person/actor.  But that's another topic.

It's good to know Columbia University did not consider the unreasonable requests of these 10 doctors.

More power to Dr. Oz.  Don't quit and stay where you are!

FRUITS ARE GOOD FOR THE HEART

The national fruit of the Philippines is mango.  My favorite is avocado.

 [Recycled Info  2/16/14]

This is informative!

We all think eating fruit means just buying fruit, cutting it up and popping it into our mouths. It's not that easy. It's important to know how and when to eat fruit.

What's the correct way to eat fruit?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUIT AFTER A MEAL! FRUIT SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN  EMPTY STOMACH.

Eating fruit like that plays a major role in detoxifying your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.

Let's say you eat two slices of bread, then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it's prevented from doing so.

In the meantime, the whole meal rots and ferments, and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach, and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

Eat your fruit on an empty stomach, or before your meal! You've heard people complain: Every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc. This will not happen if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. Fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas. Hence, you bloat!

There's no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruit becomes alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruit, you have the Secret of Beauty, Longevity, Health, Energy, Happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice drink only freshfruit juice, NOT the concentrated juice from the cans. Don't drink juice that has been heated. Don't eat cooked fruit; you don't get the nutrients at all. You get only the taste. Cooking destroys all of the vitamins.

Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit-fast to cleanse your body. Eat fruit and drink fruit juice for just 3 days, and you will be surprised when your friends say how radiant you look!

KIWI:
Tiny but mighty, and a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E and fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange!

AN APPLE
a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants and flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C, thereby helping to lower the risk of colon cancer, heart attack and stroke.

STRAWBERRY:
Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits and protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

EATING 2 - 4 ORANGES
a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent and dissolve kidney stones, and reduce the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON:

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer!

Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this applies to you. It's nice to have a cold drink after a meal, however, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you've just consumed, which slows digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks.

HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE

Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they're asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Be careful, and be aware. The more we know, the better our chance to survive.

A cardiologist said if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.

It can
 even be your life!
