Food Microbiology Fellowship at FDA





The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Division of Food Processing Science and Technology (DFPST) is seeking a laboratory scientist in food microbiology who will participate in proficiency testing, method validation and collaborative food safety research programs. DFPST is part of a research consortium at the Institute of Food Safety & Health (IFSH) (www.iit.edu/ifsh), located on the Moffett Campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Bedford Park, IL near Chicago. IFSH is a food safety research consortium of government, academic, and industry scientists.  The chosen candidate will be appointed to a 2-year fellowship position administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (http://orise.orau.gov/science-education/default.aspx). The fellowship position does not include federal employee benefits. 





The food microbiologist will be part of a team working in the areas of microbiology, food safety, microbial detection methods and proficiency testing. The ideal candidate must have a BS /MS degree in food microbiology or a closely related field.  The incumbent will be responsible for the design and continuous improvement of food microbiological proficiency testing programs and for assisting in microbiological method validation programs.  The candidate must have knowledge and experience working with microbiological cultures, identification of bacteria and modern food microbiological procedures including standard cultural methods, immunoassays and PCR procedures for the detection of pathogens in a variety of food matrices.  The incumbent must have technical skills to adopt, implement and troubleshoot microbiological methods and instrumentation and will be responsible for ensuring quality and safety systems are implemented in preparation for quality audits required for compliance with ISO 17025/17043 standards. In addition, the incumbent must assist in interpretation and evaluation of results to determine their validity and scientific significance. Experience and research skills such as statistical evaluation and interpretation of laboratory data in validating food microbiological methods are a plus.  Excellent verbal and written communication skills are needed.


Required Training Experience: Prefer BS/MS with 1-3 years of experience. Stipend depends upon training and experience.  The participant must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.
