NATURE TREELOGY
TREES
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
We all memorized and recited this poem by Joyce Kilmer in high school and if you're like my favorite brother, you remember it by heart and would recite it once in a while. He recited it for us again on our way to Rivers End Nursery in La Feria, Texas.
I thought then the name Joyce was a woman. But I was very much mistaken. It also can be a man's name like Carmen or Alex. Teachers don't usually pay much attention to details of poet's bio but their famous poem.
"JOYCE KILMER was born on December 6, 1886 in New Jersey. He graduated from Columbia University and worked as an editor on Funk & Wagnall's Dictionary. He was literary editor of an Anglican newspaper, and a feature writer of The New York Times. He converted to Catholicism in his 20's - writing poems that's deeply religious in nature. When World War I broke out in 1917, Kilmer enlisted and joined the 165th Infantry (formerly called Irish Fighting 69th, a New York City Catholic regiment). He was killed in battle by a sniper on July 30, 1918 at the young age of 31. He is buried in France. He's also famous for his poem Prayer of a Soldier in France."
