ALT Group

ALT GROUP: MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTS AND CLINICAL LAB SPECIALISTS.  It was called as such and not "Association of Medical Technologists" for example, because a lot of laboratory members have graduated with different degrees - B.S. Medical Technology, B.S. Hygiene, M.S. in Molecular Biology, 2-yr. Medical Laboratory Technician, Phlebotomy training and other associate degrees.

The purpose of ALT is "Everyday Technology.  Everyday People."  ALT was founded on September 9, 2000 in a dinner meeting at Cafe Bolero Restaurant, Chicago, Illinois.  It is 50% technology and 50% social.  It thinks global but acts local.  It is an exclusive membership to lab techs working in different hospitals, local and in other states, but honorary memberships are welcome to family and friends.  Members who joined are from the Philippines, United States, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Colombia.  All ALT Officers selected serve for a lifetime.

XX Winter Olympics

The opening of the XX Torino Olympics is by far the best of all.

Michelle Kwan is out for now but there's no age limit to passion and reaching for the

gold.  She should be encouraged to pursue her quest and go for it again -

4 years from now.  Why not?

She's still young and a quitter never wins.

Culture Club Boy George

Be careful about reading health books, you may die of a misprint. - Mark Twain

LAB CULTURE CLUB
Before there was Boy George and his Taboo, the Culture Club of the microbiology lab had been around since the discovery of animalcules by Anton Van Leeuwenhoek.
There are friendly germs and attack germs present in the human body and environment.  The body defense mechanism develop normally only when they have invaders to respond called Antigen-Antibody Reaction.  Without antigens, the immune turns against healthy tissues.  Germ exposure early in life results in increased levels of the hormones that help keep the immune system in balance.  Helpful germs called probiotics may keep people healthier.  Encountering bacteria, parasites and viruses early in life primes the immune system, making it easier for the body to fight germs.  Exposure to germs seem to protect against asthma, respiratory allergic condition in which the airways become constricted.
45% of consumer soaps now contain antimicrobial.  But the American Medical Association (AMA) says these products are not potent enough to do the job.  Microbiologists know when performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing that proper dosage and concentration are essential to kill pathogenic organisms.  So the antimicrobial residue left on the skin or countertop kills the weaker and helpful bacteria and allows the stronger and deadly microbes to flourish.  The AMA believes that normal cleanser soap and warm water do as good as job in the home or in the office.

BOY GEORGE: PATRON SAINT OF ALT CULTURE CLUB - Anointed by ALTPresident1

The other elite Culture Club lives on.  It has seen its heydeys in the 80's with Boy George.  Most of the members are microbiologists belonging to the Association of Laboratory Technologists (ALT), but others think they are karma chameleon belonging to many unique and splinter groups of bug fighters/soldiers.  They are forever dedicated in fighting the usual suspects - bugs, parasites and viruses.  Their main purpose is to eliminate diseases and to find a cure - even an ounce of prevention will do for these bugs  that come and go.
