Medication Expiration Dates

I think I got a similar message before but forgot to forward it to friends.Smile

Medication Expiration Dates--INTERESTING

By Richard Altschuler

Does the expiration date on a bottle of a medication mean anything? If a bottle of Tylenol, for example, says something like "Do not use after June 1998," and it is August 2002, should you take the Tylenol? Should you discard it? Can you get hurt if you take it? Will it simply have lost its potency and do you no good?

In other words, are drug manufacturers being honest with us when they put an expiration date on their medications, or is the practice of dating just another drug industry scam, to get us to buy new medications when the old ones that purportedly have "expired" are still perfectly good?

These are the pressing questions I investigated after my mother-in-law recently said to me, "It doesn't mean anything," when I pointed out that the Tylenol she was about to take had "expired" 4 years and a few months ago. I was a bit mocking in my pronouncement -- feeling superior that I had noticed the chemical corpse in her cabinet -- but she was equally adamant in her reply, and is generally very sage about medical issues.

So I gave her a glass of water with the purportedly "dead" drug, of which she took 2 capsules for a pain in the upper back. About a half hour later she reported the pain seemed to have eased up a bit. I said "You could be having a placebo effect," not wanting to simply concede she was right about the drug, and also not actually knowing what I was talking about. I was just happy to hear that her pain had eased, even before we had our evening cocktails and hot tub dip (we were in "Leisure World," near  Laguna Beach ,  California , where the hot tub is bigger than most  Manhattan apartments, and "Heaven," as generally portrayed, would be raucous by comparison).

Upon my return to NYC and high-speed connection, I immediately scoured the medical databases and general literature for the answer to my question about drug expiration labeling. And voila, no sooner than I could say "Screwed again by the pharmaceutical industry," I had my answer. Here are the simple facts:
First, the expiration date, required by law in the United States, beginning in 1979, specifies
only the date the manufacturer guarantees the full potency and safety of the drug -- it does not mean how long the drug is actually "good" or safe to use.
Second, medical authorities uniformly say it is safe to take drugs past their expiration date -- no matter how "expired" the drugs purportedly are. Except for possibly the rarest of exceptions, you won't get hurt and you certainly won't get killed
Studies show that expired drugs may lose some of their potency over time, from as little as 5% or less to 50% or more (though usually much less than the latter). Even 10 years after the "expiration date," most drugs have a good deal of their original potency. So wisdom dictates that if your life does depend on an expired drug, and you must have 100% or so of its original strength, you should probably toss it and get a refill, " If your life does not depend on an expired drug -- such as that for headache, hay fever, or menstrual cramps -- take it and see what happens.

One of the largest studies ever conducted that supports the above points about "expired drug" labeling was done by the US military 15 years ago, according to a feature story in the Wall Street Journal (March 29, 2000), reported by Laurie P. Cohen. The military was sitting on a $1 billion stockpile of drugs and facing the daunting process of destroying and replacing its supply every 2 to 3 years, so it began a testing program to see if it could extend the life of its inventory. The testing, conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), ultimately covered more than 100 drugs, prescription and over-the-counter.
The results showed that about 90% of them were safe and effective as far as 15 years past their original expiration date.

In the light of these results, a former director of the testing program, Francis Flaherty, said he concluded that expiration dates put on by manufacturers typically have no bearing on whether a drug is usable for longer. Mr. Flaherty noted that a drug maker is required to prove only that a drug is still good on whatever expiration date the company chooses to set. The expiration date doesn't mean, or even suggest, that the drug will stop being effective after that, nor that it will become harmful. "Manufacturers put expiration dates on for marketing, rather than scientific, reasons," said Mr. Flaherty, a pharmacist at the FDA until his retirement in 1999. "It's not profitable for them to have products on a shelf for 10 years. They want turnover."

The FDA cautioned there isn't enough evidence from the program, which is weighted toward drugs used during combat, to conclude most drugs in consumers' medicine cabinets are potent beyond the expiration date. Joel Davis, however, a former FDA expiration-date compliance chief, said that with a handful of exceptions -- notably nitroglycerin, insulin, and some liquid antibiotics -- most drugs are probably as durable as those the agency has tested for the military. "Most drugs degrade very slowly," he said. "In all likelihood, you can take a product you have at home and keep it for many years " Consider aspirin. Bayer AG puts 2-year or 3-year dates on aspirin and says that it should be discarded after that. However, Chris Allen, a vice president at the Bayer unit that makes aspirin, said the dating is "pretty conservative" ; when Bayer has tested 4-year-old aspirin, it remained 100% effective, he said. So why doesn't Bayer set a 4-year expiration date? Because the company often changes packaging, and it undertakes "continuous improvement programs," Mr. Allen said. Each change triggers a need for more expiration-date testing, and testing each time for a 4-year life would be impractical Bayer has never tested aspirin beyond 4 years, Mr. Allen said. But Jens Carstensen has. Dr Carstensen, professor emeritus at the  University of  Wisconsin 's pharmacy school, who wrote what is considered the main text on drug stability, said, "I did a study of different aspirins, and after 5 years, Bayer was still excellent. Aspirin, if made correctly, is very stable.

Okay, I concede. My mother-in-law was right, once again. And I was wrong, once again, and with a wiseacre attitude to boot. Sorry mom.

Now I think I'll take a swig of the 10-year dead package of Alka Seltzer in my medicine chest -- to ease the nausea I'm feeling from calculating how many billions of dollars the pharmaceutical industry bilks out of unknowing consumers every year who discard perfectly good drugs and buy new ones because they trust the industry's "expiration date labeling."

How long will you live? Northwestern Mutual Longetivity

NOTE: Check your gender first, not age and then gender.

Well, I was honest with my answers (eat processed foods and meat only and no exercise) and my lifespan was calculated to 90.  This is correct!  Because even before I did not need a Lifespan Calculator I have guesstimated my tomb's day to be 92!  Yeah! I'm not bragging either of my lifestyle.  I am what I eat  -- pork belly and lots of fats.  We have to consider that we live in a multicultural society, of different ethnicity  with inherent genetic longevity.  Caucasians are different from Asians when it comes to DNA, food and other external factors.  The human body is pre-programmed to self destruction.  I admit you can buy time and live a few years more.  When it's time, it's time and no exercise till kingdom come can prevent us from pushing daisies.

Well, according to this calculator, I will live to 96. My social security check hopefully last as long or I will be on WELFARE.  Josie

THIS IS TOO PRECIOUS NOT TO PASS ON.

I  certainly don't think an adult could explain this more beautifully!

THIS  IS FABULOUS!!!
It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in  Chula Vista , CA  . He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to 'explain God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well?
(and he had such an assignment, in  California , and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen!)
EXPLANATION  OF GOD:
'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just  babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and  fathers.'

'God's second most important  job is listening to prayers An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't  have time to listen to the radio or TV because of  this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.'

'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.'

'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.'

'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and  performing miracles and trying to teach the people  who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his  father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K.'

'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.'

'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.'

'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God!

Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.'

'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.'

'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me  back anytime he pleases.

And...that's why I believe in God.'

(If  you believe in God, please pass this on, and may God bless you too.)
Have  an awesome day, and know that someone has thought  about you!

A Fungus Named SpongeBob

A newly discovered fungus (aka mushroom to chefs) was named after the popular cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants because of its sea sponge shape.  It does not have the cap and stem look common to fungi and no one is sure if it's edible.  The look alike sponge was found by Dennis Desjardin, a Biology professor from San Francisco State University, not in his garden but in the island of Borneo.

COLLEGE CLASSMATE SPEAKS OUT

FROM THE DESK OF CAPITALIST MS. PIGGYSmile
Unfortunately, folks believe what they want to believe.  Democrats will forever vote Democrat.  Republicans will forever vote Republican.  Independents don't know their own mind.  All I can say is, Obama and the Democrats may be in power at the moment, but the best protection is to isolate oneself from the likes of these liars and demagogues.  What I usually do is educate myself by analyzing what's good for me and the extreme motives of these professional politicians and their wives (telling me what to eat!)  A few years ago I asked an immigrant worker ( belonging to one of Asian minorities) in a restaurant if he vote.  He said, no.  I asked why? He said politics as a whole don't help him. He may be right because the whites, the blacks and the Hispanics have a powerful voice in the political arena and control everything that matters such as social, religion and environmental among other things. I don't take politics seriously because I take care of myself first.

Video "The Eagle"

There's much more to this "The Eagle" video: It's the attached video song.  I was searching my CD collection yesterday to enhance my video.  I found a church song called "Fly Like a Bird" sung by Skokie Chix, cantors from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Parish in Evanston-Skokie, Illinois.  I even saw the multi-platinum singer Mariah Carey singing it.  The song composer was Ken Canedo http://www.spiritandsong.com , who currently serves as a Catholic youth minister and pastoral musician for parishes in Portland, Oregon.  His recent CD called Doxology is a collection of contemporary and traditional music to honor the Most Holy Trinity.  Also a brilliant author, his book Keep theFire Burning:The Folk Mass Revolution is  a must read.  What impressed me most about him is not only originality but his liturgical musings and unwavering loyalty and understanding of the Catholic Church at the time of chaos and mass demonstrations of the 60's.  He came from a big Filipino family in Los Angeles but said San Francisco is his favorite city. May I add you don't have to be Catholic to appreciate his music.

About the Eagle photos+text: They were e-mailed to me and I wish I could give credit where credit is due.  But you how that goes - everything is "forwarded."

My Man Harold

Awesome! This retired chemical engineer was also a scientist!

SOS!

Obama is fearmongering as usual.  He said retired folks, senior citizens, veterans and, may I add, other Social Security welfare recipients including jobless folks getting unemployment checks won't be able to get their money if the debt ceiling is not increased by the deadline of August 3rd.  Bullcrap!  Not true!  It goes to show the man who never held a career job in his life but got elected because of the color of his skin and hypes from the mainstream media and Hollywood celebrities does not know how to manage a nation.  It's inconceivable a super-rich nation like the USA does not have money with billions and billions of tax revenues going to the Federal Treasury coming from 50 STATES!  Let's elect to the Executive Office in 2012 someone WHO CAN!

QUOTE FROM HAROLD:
"I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that
you're retired?' Well, I'm fortunate to have a chemical
engineering background, and one of the things I enjoy most
is converting beer, wine and vodka into urine.

Then I piss on a photo of Obama!
I do it every day and I really enjoy it."
Harold is an inspiration to us all.

Hoover Dam Bridge Construction PowerPoint

Truly an amazing feat of engineering.  I have to check when they started the bridge  and how long it took to finish it. It was the only dam I've ever visited and was inside in that small building below the dam.  To think it was constructed in the deep of the great American Depression.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center

Dear John,

Your generous support through our years in the White House meant so much to President Bush and to me. George based his Presidency on what we believe are timeless principles: that freedom is universal . . . that all life is precious . . . that to whom much is given, much is expected . . . and that people can spend their money better than the government can.

I believe you also embrace these principles. That's why I'm sending you this email today.

We are now more than two years into the planning and development of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Great progress is being made on the building and grounds, and the Bush Center is already inspiring ideas, innovation, and action for a freer and better world.

We've accomplished so much, but there is much more that remains to be done.

Your support of the work at the Bush Center is very important to us, and we hope we can bring you on board for this new chapter in our lives. Having the support of individuals like you, who were loyal friends during George's Administration, would be such a great honor.

If you have already joined the Bush Center as a Charter Member, thank you. If not, please join us as a Charter Member and once again stand with George and me as we continue our public service.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Laura Bush
