Simple Cures, Simple Preventions Part I 2006

LEMONADE  VS.  ICED TEA

HEALTH & LAB
TECHNOLOGY

Part I: Simple Cures, Simple
Preventions

Here are tidbits of information and potpourri of homemade cures and preventions for old and trendy
diseases.  However, talk to your doctor first before using
them.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE (AD)

Health experts believe the real cause of AD is brain
inflammation.  Toxins slowly accumulate in the brain over the years and the
buildup triggers inflammation that gradually damages brain cells and leads to
memory loss and AD.

  • Low-cost anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin,
ibuprofen, and naproxen are used to reduce swelling of arthritis but they may
ease brain inflammation as well.  According to New England Journal of
Medicine (NEJM), taking any of these drugs regularly for 2 or more years could
cut the risk of AD by up to 80% even to those that already have the
    disease.

  • Have a balance intake of Vitamins B, C & E -
Lean meats and low-fat dairy products for B12, bananas, potatoes, and green
veggies for B6, orange juice, and fortified cereals with low-fat milk and
    grains for folate.

  • Have a low-cal diet - Lab study on old mice who'd been
fed with low cal diet showed fewer signs of aging in their brain cells than
mice that had been fed with traditional diets.  Have a rainbow meal of
colorful fruits and memory-boosting antioxidant veggies like carrots and
    mangoes for beta carotene.

  • Skip a little bit on fat and keep fit - People
who carry the Alzheimer gene Apo E4 are more likely to develop AD if they eat
high-fat diet.  Take a walk and supply your brain with fresh supply of
    oxygen.

  • Stop smoking - It doubles, even quadruples, the risk
    of dementia.

  • Socialize and keep active.

BITES AND STINGS

Bees and yellow jackets like me.  They really,
really like me.  One time I was in the yard barbecuing and a honeybee left
a stinger in my thigh.   What I did do:

  • Using a finger remove the transparent hook-like
stinger before it pumps the venom.  Allergic reaction to bee sting can
kill in less than an hour.  Bites by bees, wasps, and yellow jackets
cause more deaths than all other venomous animals like dogs, spiders, and
    snakes.

  • Wash the area with warm water to prevent
    infection.

  • Mix unseasoned meat tenderizer with water and apply
    the paste to the bite.

  • Hold an ice pack or ice cubes wrapped in paper towel
on the red swelling for 20 minutes, and then leave it off for 10
    minutes.

BREAST CANCER (BC)

How to beat the odds:

  • Enjoy a refreshing drink - Grape juice spritzer (a cup
of grape juice, half a cup of club soda, a dash of lemon juice, pour over ice
and bottoms up); banana-carrot or apple smoothie (toss a medium banana and
half a cup of plain or vanilla yogurt into the blender.  Add 2 cups of
fresh carrot juice or a cup of apple juice); apple iced tea (place few slices
of apple in the teapot, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon to taste and add two
tea bags, pour in 2 cups of boiling water, and steep.); green tea.

  • Soak up the sun - Spend at least 30 minutes a day and
get a D, the sunshine vitamin.  According to a recent study, women who
live in the northern part get BC more often than women in the tropics and
    sunny southern part of Europe.

  • No alcohol allowed - According to USDA guidelines,
even one drink a day can raise the risk of  BC.

  • Control your fat - Obesity, especially abdominal fat,
is a major risk factor for BC.

  • Get physical after menopause - The risk is cut by 40 %
by occupational and household activity (using the stairs, walking a block or
two, loading your own groceries, gardening, sweeping and raking the leaves,
walking with pets and other activities.

BURNS

Most burns occur at home. There's the first (top
skin layer), second (deeper), and third (deepest) degree burns.  For
instance, once in a while I get burn (ouch, ouch, ouch!) when I fry chicken and
other meat which I do a lot because it's easy.  What I did do:

SIMPLE PRECAUTIONS

  • Lower the temperature setting located at the bottom
part of the water heater.  Make sure the temperature does not go above
    120 degrees.

  • Use mitten holders for hot pots and pans - They were
not placed in the kitchen for decorations.

  • Be extra careful with food cooked in a microwave -
it's cool outside but may be hot inside.

  • Wear rubber gloves and protective eye goggles when
using household chemicals like oven cleaner.  If you can afford, buy a
    self-cleaning oven.

  • Never use the stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Keep hot cups and food dishes away from the edges of
    counters or table cloths.

  • In fast food drive-in, don't drink hot coffee and
    drive on.  Stop and park.

  • Don't smoke in bed.
  • Store household chemicals in a high place out of reach
of children.  Pot handles and iron cords must be placed away from the
edges of stove and ironing board where a child could reach or pull
    them.

SIMPLE TREATMENTS

  • Run cold water over the burn for 10-15
minutes.  You can also soak the burned area in cold water or
cover with wet towels.  Do not use ice.

  • Cover the burn with a gauze bandage.
  • Don't apply butter, mayonnaise, or commercial
burn ointments.  They slow healing and increase the risk of
    infection.

  • Don't pop a blister.  It's the body's way
of protecting the burned tissue.  If one breaks, apply a light layer of
    antibiotic cream.

  • Use common sense.  If it's a bad burn,
    seek medical help.

COLD SORES (CS)

Everyone gets cold sores.  I've seen worse
case of CS in friends and co-workers.  The herpes simplex virus I (HSVI)
must have been activated and the immune system was under attacked.  There
are homemade remedies beside Abreva.  (Abreva is an
FDA-approved nonprescription medication for CS.  The active ingredient
docosanol does not work by destroying the virus but it changes the skin cells
creating a barrier against the virus.  A tube costs $15.

Here are simple household cures:

  • Lemon balm - According to research, using a
cream made from this minty herb 4 or 5 times a day cuts the healing time much
    shorter.

  • Eat food rich in zinc such as meat, shellfish,
beans and grains.  Place zinc lozenge directly on the sore and let it
    dissolve slowly.

  • Break off a tip of a leaf of Aloe vera plant
(if you got one) and squeeze the gel on the CS.  Apply 3 times a day
until the sore dries up.  Aloe vera reduces inflammation and fortifies
the skin with B vitamins, vitamin C, and amino acids.

  • Ice, ice baby - As soon as a sore appears,
apply ice for 15 minutes a day.  Drinking a cold liquid or sucking a
    frozen popsicle might also work.

  • Got milk?  Dip a soft, clean cloth in milk
and apply directly to CS.  Do the 5 & 5 - press for 5 seconds and
remove for 5 seconds.  Continue this process for 5 minutes.  Repeat
every few hours.  Some experts think the protein in the milk speeds
    healing.

  • Anal to oral?  Pepto Bismol, the diarrhea
medicine, might really work on CS.  Strange but one person reports
getting relief from applying Pepto Bismol when a CS appears.

  • Drink tea.  Additional studies might be
needed according to Dr. Milton Schiffenbauer of Pace University in New York
but drinking all kinds of tea, hot or cold, black or green, blended or
unblended, filtered or unfiltered, and bottled tea drinks like Bigelow
and Snapple may destroy the CS virus.

  • Take Aspirin.  It's not called the wonder
drug for nothing.  Take one every day until the symptom
    disappears.

  • Eat yogurt.  Just be sure to buy yogurt
    with live culture of Lactobacillus
acidophilus and must be refrigerated. Capsules
are also available in health food store.

  • Take lysine, an amino acid present in wheat
germ, poultry, pork, cottage cheese, and ricotta cheese.  According
to doctors at Indiana University Medical School, lysine can prevent CS from
reappearing in chronic sufferers. Lysine is also available as a supplement at
    many health food stores.

  • Have a well-balanced diet of vitamins - C,
    E, folic acid, and zinc.

My favorite movie of all-time,THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (Charlton Heston & Yul Brynner) was the very first Hollywood movie that I ever did see in Manila.  But surprisingly enough, ABC TV always show it every year during Easter season.  I don't know why they do it since it's not a religious channel but I think it's the only movie that is shown every year.  Good for us.  Good for them.  God bless their heart for sharing.
The attached file forwarded by Tina, "Red Sea Crossing" is based on historical and archeological facts whether you're a non-believer or not.  What a journey.
All I know is when it comes to religion, In God I Trust!  And my prayers are always answered just like what Moses did.

Locked your  keys in your car ????
Did you know this??

ALTPRES1: Hmmmmmmmm....is this
how terrorists use their cell phones? Detonating improvised bombing devise by
cell phones?  Is there a jamming technology?

If you lock your keys in the  car and
the spare keys are at home, call

someone on your (or someone  else's)
cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from
your car  door and have the

other person at your home press the unlock
button of  your key fob

(clicker), holding it near the phone on
their end. Your car  doors will

unlock.
Saves someone from having drive your keys to you.

Distance is no object you could be
hundreds of miles away, and if you

can reach someone who has the other
"remote" for your car, you can

unlock the doors (or the
trunk!).

Editor's Note * It works fine! We
tried it out, and it unlocked our

car over a cell phone!)
Mike's  Note *
I locked the car had my youngest daughter
call me while I was  far away

from the car.  I clicked
open into the phone and I could hear the car

doors unlock
through her cell phone.. My daughter confirmed that sure

enough the doors
opened.

Sometimes, I wonder.  Take for instance, yesterday, when I was watching France 24 TV news.  They have this female French correspondent, reporting in English about the capture of Gaddafi or Qaddafi or Khadafi.  I could not understand a damn word she was saying.  Couldn't they get someone who speaks unbroken English?  Who are the best news reporters/correspondents?  RT & Al Jazeera, if you ask me.  I did not include my favorite BBC since English English is their mother tongue.  That's the problem with the snotty French people - they speak French only.  One time I was ordering food in a French bistro - the menu is very misleading and the waiter snotty and tempermental.  Hey, I would like to know what I'm ordering.  I don't like escargot and frogs.  No snails and frogs for me.  I am, after all, a carnivorous.

How true !!!!!!!!!

<

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig..

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick' ?

Who's to blame?  If living longer is the problem so be it.  One possible solution is to up the age of retirement to 69.  What I like about Social Security is you can get your benefit at age 62, not all that is due but still fine with me.   One should not just rely on Social Security.   Although risky and daring you can make conservative investments also.  Being a good neighbor, I don't have any problem helping other poor countries that suffered natural disasters.

Subject: FW: REALITY CHECK

Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your employer did too.

It totaled 15% of your income before taxes.

If you averaged only 30K over your working life, that’s close to $220,500.

If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer’s contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working (me) you’d have $892,919.98.

If you took out only 3% per year, you receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years, and that’s with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit!
If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you’d have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madhoff ever had.

Entitlement my ass, I paid cash for my social security insurance!!!!

Just because they borrowed the money, doesn't make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!! Congressional benefits, aka. free healthcare, outrageous retirement packages , 67 paid holidays , three weeks paid vacation , unlimited paid sick days , now that's welfare , and they have the nerve to call my retirement, Entitlements !!!!!!

We're "broke" & can't help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans, and Homeless etc.???????????

In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti , Chile , Turkey, Pakistan .......home of bin Laden and now recognizing Libyan Rebels before we really know who they are. Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid nor do they get any breaks while our government organizations pour Hundreds of Billions of $$$$$$'s and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when its time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place?

We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.

AMERICA: a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, elderly going without 'needed' meds, and mentally ill without treatment – etc., etc.

YET....................
They have a 'Benefit' for the people of Haiti on 12 TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding, doctors and medical supplies. (P.S. they are still living in ruins)

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave 'US' the same support they give to other countries.

Sad isn't it?

WAKE UP AMERICA, SHOUT THIS TO YOU NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS THAT THINK “OH WELL, BUSINESS AS USUAL” YOU CAN CHANGE IT, KEEP SHOUTING IN WRITING AND PHONE CALLS, SHOW UP AT MEETINGS NOW NOT LATER!!

99% of people won't have the guts to forward this.

I  ADMIT  I  AM  A  2-TIME  LOSER:    I VOTED FOR MCCAIN AND ROMNEY.   THIS DUDE IS A WINNER AND AN ENTREPRENEUR --  Right on, right on, right on!!!

Most of my Filipino American friends voted for Obama in the 2008 and 2012 elections. They said  he's young, good-looking and intelligent.  They were so damn proud they voted for him.  Unlike McCain who's old, continue the war, and didn't know how to use the computer.  And Romney...he's just rich and a Mormon.  As a well-informed Republican I'm puking like McCain.  I don't know about Romney.

ENTITLEMENT SOCIETY

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE WITH THIS ARTICLE, written by someone who shall remain anonymous because I did not ask for permission. Selected and digested:

Well, what happened on election day?  There are lots of pundits who have egg on their faces today, Nov. 7, 2012.  Apparently, the looming probability of economic collapse didn't matter to voters.  The fact that the current government spends $$$TEN (10) BILLION DOLLARS$$$ while we take in only $$$six billion$$$ everyday didn't bother the majority of the voters one little bit.  What bothered the voters was the perceived association of a certain political party (which will go unmentioned for fear of the government thought police and tax assesors) with traditional Judeo-Christian values.  I am not sure that party really is Christian, but it seemed smart at the time to appear Christian.  The election was not about the economy.  It was about sex and work.
Sigmund Freud was a strange little man, but as the saying goes, even the clock that is broken is right twice a day.  Freud said something that I think is actually reasonable and useful in deciphering what happened at the election.  He defined mental health as the ability to love and work.  If Freud is right, The US of America took a major step toward becoming the ME of America on election day.  Citizens of ME demand that the government give them what they want and make no restrictions regarding the consequences of sexual couplings, even if those consequences are living and breathing children.  It will guarantee my right to kill them, if I deem it necessary.  Our sexuality is no longer directed toward love defined as the giving of life.  Our economic life is less and less associated with productive work.  Pleasure and leisure are the order of the day, not Freud's "love and work."  We have rejected sanity, at least by Freud's definition, and this is the inevitable result of a nation that voted not against a particular party, but against God as we Children of Abraham have known Him these 4,000 years.  The above unmentioned party will now probably come to its senses and reject pro-family, pro-life issues in the hope of winning elections.  I heard someone say that Nov. 6, 2012 was the inevitable result of April 6, 1917 when the US entered World War I on the side of England, Russia and France.  Why would one think that?  Empire!  That's why!  America ceased to be the founders envisioned when it entered the wars of imperialism, the war with Mexico in 1846, the War between the states, 1865, the war with Spain, 1898.  Having driven the indigenous people off the land, we proceeded to expand in what we called "manifest destiny".  It was our destiny to conquer territory, to bring Protestantism and the American system of government to all the world.  Now we are the world's police and we consider it our duty to bring democracy and condoms to all the little nations of the world.  We are experiencing the narcissism and decadence that seem inevitably to result from empire.  Christ is not King! We have no King but Caesar! We are an imperial nation and like all empires the bubble eventually burst.
Why all the history? I'm getting there.  People say there are no atheists in fox holes.  That is not true.  Studies indicate that fox holes are the birthing rooms of atheism.  Soldiers who see death and other barbarities wonder about the goodness of an all powerful God, forgetting all the while that God does not do these things. Europe lost its faith in the trenches of the first war.  The second half of the Great War, fought from 1936 to 1945, produced a second crop of soldiers who came back home as materialists saying, "My kids will not suffer the way I did."  And thus were born the fabulous fifties when American consumerism exploded with tract housing, big cars and a religion of convenience.  The pill made it possible for Mr. and Mrs. America to have just 2 or three kids on whom they could lavish all that they had been denied by two world wars, punctuated by economic depression.  The greatest value of this country became not honor, not country, not God.  The ruling principle of this country became "Gimme." (That's Chicagoan for "Give Me.") The greatest generation, so called, gave way to the most narcissistic generation (the baby boomers, of whom I am one) who gave birth to the entitlements of the Gimme generation.
We have just had an election that, I believe is the result of that series of wars.  People did not vote the economy.  They did not vote for the good of the country.  They voted for themselves.  There is a video on You Tube in which a woman very eloquently states her preference for one candidate because of her gratitude for the cell phone and other social services that his government had provided her.  Another example: a popular African American comedian made a very humorous video pointing out how a certain unlikely candidate should have been very acceptable to Caucasian Americans because, among other things, he supports same-sex marriage.  His opponent did not support such unions, at least not in this election.  America is no longer a Christian country.  One conservative commentator made the point on election night that the country has significantly more people now who claim to be non religious.  He asked the question "What else can we expect from a country that has rejected God?"
We have to face the facts.  The Christian cannot now sing "My country 'tis of thee.." rather we sing "My country 'twas of thee..."  We need to be Christians no matter what the consequence.  We need to quit pretending that all those voters who vote for their pleasures over their conscience are Christians.  Perhaps we need to start treating them at least as they are: ex Christians.  Perhaps we don't care about whether or not they go to hell, just so they come back to church for major holidays and pretend to be believers.
As for those who still are Christian who wonder what to do in this newly foreign country, I can only quote St. Paul: "May you become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe." (Phil 2:15)  Make sure you shine.  The world and the country needs light more that it has since the days of the Third Reich.
This country, The United States, formerly the greatest on earth is now ranked:

20th in economy
12th in entrepreneurship and opportunity
10th in governance
5th in education
2nd in health (Hey, that's not bad! Who's number one, I wonder)
27th in safety and security
14th in personal freedom
10th in social capital

Awesome!  No, Josie, I have not seen the Sistine Chapel before the restoration.  I was there in 2009 in my first world pilgrimage and was quite overwhelmed by its beauty and grandeur.  I've seen how it looked on TV while they were in the process of painting the chapel with utmost and painstaking care.  The restorers did an excellent job!  I looked and looked till my eyes got tired and my neck got hurt.
This is much better viewing - up close and convenient.

Hi! Evryone,
This is what is great about technology, it is really quite amazing to see the painting up close to see all the datails. I have a question to ask, Has any of you seen the Sistine Chapel before the restoration? Do you like it better after the restoration? I first saw the Sistine Chapel in 1978 on my first trip to Europe with my Mother. I was in awe at the beauty. At the time, the color is not vivid from the soot of the candles. Yet it seemed more fitting as the Chapel is quite old. The patina was beautiful & the whole place seem more holy. Again I saw it in 1994 with my sisters celebrating my oldest sister's & my birthday , our 60th & 50th, after the restoration. I was shocked at the vividness of the color & was not very impressed with it. It seemed gaudy at first, too much color. After seeing it 2 more times, I think the color finally wins me over but I will never forget the 1st time I saw it. It was heavenly. Josie

Here is an amazing bit of technology that you would never see in person, and you would NEVER be alone in the room. It is ALWAYS VERY CROWDED and of course you can't see Michelangelo's artwork close up as you can here. This is especially spectacular if you have a large high-definition screen!

The Sistine Chapel Virtually  VIEW EVERY PART OF THE MICHAEL ANGELO'S MASTERPIECE JUST CLICK AND **DRAG YOUR ARROW IN THE DIRECTION YOU WISH TO SEE
.

In the lower left, click on the plus (+) to move closer, on the minus (-) to move away. Choir is thrown in free..

AMAZING! MOVE THE ARROW AND YOU WILL SEE EVERY PART OF THE CHAPEL.

This virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel is incredible. Apparently done by Villanova at the request of the Vatican .

Thought you would enjoy the quality and a bit of Rome on your computer.  Amazing what can be done with technology.
