Obama Faultline

POLITICAL JOKEBOX

For those who have not read this yet...

This just in...the USGS National Seismological and Earthquake Information Center says the earthquake was caused by an unknown faultline running under D.C. and through Virginia.

It is now being called OBAMA'S FAULT.

Some think it was the founding fathers rolling over in their graves! Obama will say it's really Bush's Fault.

Breaking News:

Seismologists have confirmed that it was an earthquake and not the 14.6 trillion dollar check bouncing on the East Coast.

Religion is such a touchy subject when it comes to my political views.  I don't discuss religion with my friends when politics is involved.  Here in America, I have read in a survey that Republicans are more religious than Democrats. That there are 2 Conservatives for 1 Democrat.  Give me a break.  I don't believe it.  In the last presidential election, California Democrats voted 80% for Obama who has no known affiliated religion, except he was present for 20 years listening to the rants of Reverend Jeremiah Wright in his Chicago church. In the southern bible belt, 100% of Baptist blacks voted for Obama.  Blood will always be thicker than water, brother (sister).  Take for instance Bush's former Secretary of State Colin Powell - he voted for his black brother Obama.  No doubt if he did not he'd be called Uncle Tom. I'm guilty of this for I would have done the same thing when I do vote for Miss Philippines in the Miss Universe contest, any Filipino or Ilocano or anything. And I'm not sorry.  It's just the way it is. I wonder what Obama and his family do on Sundays?  Do they kneel, bow down and pray 4 times in a day or play basketball and other games? Not that I care, I just wonder.  So, does religion matter? No, religion does not matter when it comes to politics. It's been my longtime observation that money in the form of social welfare for any Democrats, poor and well-to-do, will always trump up religion.  Most, if not all of my friends vote Democrats.  It's not kind to criticize these folks because they have their union jobs and family to think and care of.  No money, no family.  A friend told me I'm the only Republican in Evanston, a Democrat stronghold.  One may ask why Jews, supposed to be very religious people, vote Democrat?  Again, because when it comes to money and social causes, religion is of no consequence to them.

Everyone's god is money.  Hey, if you find one who's not, I'd like to meet him or her.

This has been circulating since March 19, 2010, maybe earlier.  I think I got this before but maybe not.  After a while things tend to look the same.  Oh, well.

I don't go to megastores -- too big to find what I'm looking for.  Just for curiousity, I went to Wal-Mart in Beijing when I was there in 2007.  It's the same as here except the products they have are all MADE IN USA!

Just kidding!

LOL!

Thought you'd enjoy this read!... I'm not that big of a fan of WalMart but, hey.  The author has a point! ...

Wal-Mart vs. the Morons

1.

Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart every hour

of every day.

2.
This works out to
$20,928 every minute!

3.
Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to
St...

Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4.
Wal-Mart is bigger than
Home Depot + Kroger +

Target + Sears + Costco K-Mart combined...

5.
Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people, is the world's

largest private employer, and most speak English.

6.

Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.

7.
Wal-Mart now sells more food than
Kroger and

Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only fifteen years.

8.
During this same period, 31 big supermarket chains

sought bankruptcy.

9.
Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store

in the world.

10.

Wal-Mart has approx. 3,900 stores in the USA of

which 2,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than

it had five years ago...

11.

This year 7.2 billion different purchasing

experiences will occur at Wal-Mart stores.

(Earth's population is

approximately 6.5 Billion.)

12.
90% of all Americans live within fifteen miles of

a Wal-Mart.

13.
Wal-Mart has gross sales that total more than the

total revenue of all the countries in the world,

except 6.

You may think that I am complaining, but I am
really laying the ground work for suggesting that

MAYBE we should hire the

guys who run  Wal-Mart to fix the  economy.

This should be read and understood by all Americans

Democrats,  Republicans,  EVERYONE!!

To the President and all 535 voting members
of the Legislature, both parties.

lessen our  dependence on foreign oil.
It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a
budget of $24 billion a year
and we import more oil than ever before.
You had 32 years to get it right
and it is an abysmal failure.

!!!You have FAILED !!!
In every "government service" you have  shoved
down our throats while  overspending our tax dollars.

AND YOU WANT AMERICANS
TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BE TRUSTED
WITH A GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ??

YOU THINK YOU CAN RUN THE
AUTO INDUSTRY.... THE BANKING SYSTEM?????

MAYBE WE OUGHT TO KICK YOUR EGG-HEAD
BUDDY BUMS OUT OF OFFICE AND
HIRE WAL-MART  TO RUN THE GOVERNMENT ???

 WAL-MART
SEEMS TO KNOW HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS...
WHY DON'T YOU GUYS JUST ADMIT

IT'S WAY BEYOND YOUR PAY GRADE, AND QUIT?

Folks, keep this circulating.
It is very well stated.
Maybe it will end up in the e-mails of some of our "duly elected'
(they never read anything) and their  staff will clue them in on how Americans feel.

COMPLEMENT FIXATION

}

SERO-IMMUNOLOGICAL REACTION

AND BASIC PRINCIPLE

COMPLEMENT FIXATION

Test tubes

An important constituent of the blood which is essential for the lytic action of certain antibacterial bodies and also for the opsonizing action of antibodies is called complement.  The origin of complement is not very well understood.  But apparently, it is a mixture of globulin and mucoprotein and that by lability, we can say that it is protein in nature.  Complement consists of four components, known as C'1, C'2, C'3 and C'4.  It is believed that antibody serves only as a go-between for the complement and what connects the cells to the complement is called an "amboceptor." Thus, if complement is not present, no reaction will go to completion.  The mechanism by which complement produces its effect is not known.  Combination of complement with sensitized cell may be due to non-specific physio-chemical forces.  Example of this is some sort of digestion may follow after its combination with sensitized cell.

Complement occurs in blood of various species and one of the best sources of complement for hemolytic systems is guinea pig serum.  It's often found, however, that an animal's complement is weak in activating the lysis of the blood cells of its own species.  Heating of complement to 56 C for 30 minutes destroys its activity.  It is also inactivated by various reagents or treatments such as prolonged shaking, additions of various salts, acid or alkali and also upon exposure to ultraviolet rays and alpha particles.  Splitting of complement signifies that as electrolytes are removed from the serum, the complementary activity is lost.  It has been known for instance that calcium ions enhance complementary action, that salt and magnesium sulfate increases the hemolytic activity of complement.  Hence, absence of magnesium and calcium ions prevents complement from combining with antigen-antibody reaction.  Calcium and magnesium must be present in order to produce hemolysis.

Complement fixation is a process in which the complement becomes bound or "fixed" in anumerous variety of other antigen-antibody reactions leading to the removal of the free complement from the system.  The process of chemical fixation can be divided into 3 steps:

E - Erythrocytes

A - Antibody

C'x - One or more complement components

E + A = EA

EA + C'x + CA = EAC'x

EAC'x + C'y + Mg = EAC'xC'y

The ability of antigen-antibody compounds to combine with complement depends upon the following factors: species origin of antibody and complement, the size of the antigen-antibody complex, complete precipitation should occur.  Antigen and antiserum have the power of non-specifically removing or inactivating some complement and this is called anticomplementary action.  The anticomplementary effect of the reagents used must be carefully tested by setting up controls.  Here are the probable causes of anticomplementary action:

  1. Presence of particulate matters that absorb complement

  2. Old sera or those contaminated with bacteria or by soap, acid, alkali and so forth.

  3. Sera of syphilitic patients (especially when it is heated).

The hemolytic effects of complement are very much emphasized because lysis is the most convenient way of detecting and measuring complement activity.  Roles of complement in immnune reactions: opsonizing activity, lysis of certain microorganisms, effects on the precipitin and agglutinin reactions and virus neutralization.  Conditiions that affect complement fixation: temperature, time of incubation, electrolysis and pH (hydrogen ion concentration).  Complement fixation test is valuable in the detection of syphilitic reagin.  The test is done by adding standard cardiolipin antigen and guinea pig serum complement to the patient's serum.  After considerable time, sheep cells plus hemolysin are added.  If hemolysis occurs, free complement is present and the unknown contains no antibody.  If no hemolysis, the complement has been bound by antigen-reagin complex and the unknown is positive.  Also, complement fixation tests conducted with cardiolipin antigens are of values not only in the diagnosis of syphilis and other treponemal diseases but, possibly, in relation to their treatment as well as on the basis that persistently negative serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reactions may be acceptable as criteria of complete recovery.  Moreover, it is now well-established that complement fixation tests conducted with virulent Treponema pallidum and the Reiter protein antigen are of proven diagnostic value in the diagnosis of viral, rickettsial, mycotic infections and in protozoal and helminthic infestments.

OLD LAB PROCEDURES

One very popular test in the annals of serological test is the "Wasserman."  There are many modifications and they differ considerably in specificity, that is, freedom from false positive reactions, and sensitivity (the ability to detect small amounts of specific antibody).  It is necessary then to refer to the test by  the generally accepted name of the modification used.  The two technics assigned are the Kolmer modification and the one-fifth volume Kolmer test using the Reiter Protein antigen (R.P.C.F. test).  The former is widely used and is properly suited for the study of complement fixation tests in general and permits the detection of sources of error.  The R.P.C.F. is similar to the Kolmer but uses smaller quantities of reagents and treponemal antigen.  As a whole, complement fixation techniques are intricate, depending on the interaction of several labile components.

Dementia Murphy's Lesser Law

Having traced my family history and genetic profile, I'll have dementia at age 92.  Will following the 20 steps below buy me time and hold it for few more years?  What used to be 90 is now 80, so come and see me when I'm 102.  Let's chit-chat.

                            Dementia

.

Most of us start worrying about dementia after retirement - and that may be too little, too late. Experts say that if you really want to ward off dementia, you need to start taking care of your brain in your 30s and 40s - or even earlier.

"More and more research is suggesting that lifestyle is very important to your brain's health," says Dr. Paul Nussbaum, a neuropsychologist and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "If you want to live a long, healthy life, then many of us need to start as early as we can."

So what can you do to beef up your brain - and possibly ward off dementia?  Nussbaum, who recently gave a speech on the topic for the Winter Park ( Fla. ) Health Foundation, offers 20 tips that may help.

1.

Join clubs or organizations that need volunteers.  If you start  volunteering now, you won't feel lost and unneeded after you retire.

2.

Develop a hobby or two.  Hobbies help you develop a robust brain because you're trying something new and complex.

3.

Practise writing with your non-dominant hand several minutes everyday.  This will exercise the opposite side of your brain and fire up those neurons.

4.

Take dance lessons. In a study of nearly 500 people, dancing was the only regular physical activity associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease.  The people who danced three or four times a week showed 76 percent less incidence of dementia than those who danced only once a week or not at all.

5.

Need a hobby? Start gardening.  Researchers in New Zealand found that, of 1,000 people, those who gardened regularly were less likely to suffer from dementia!  Not only does gardening reduce stress, but gardeners use their brains to plan gardens; they use visual and spatial reasoning to lay out a garden.

{6}

Walking daily can reduce the risk of dementia because cardiovascular health is important to maintain blood flow to the brain.  or...Buy a pedometer and walk 10,000 steps a day.

{7}

Read and write daily. Reading stimulates a wide variety of brain areas that process and store information.  Likewise, writing (not copying) stimulates many areas of the brain as well.

8.

Start knitting. Using both hands works both sides of your brain.  And it's a stress reducer.

9.

Learn a new language. Whether it's a foreign language or sign language, you are working your brain by making it go back and forth between one language and the other.  A researcher in England found that being bilingual seemed to delay symptoms of Alzheimer's disease for four years.  And some research suggests that the earlier a child learns sign language, the higher his IQ - and people with high IQs are less likely to have dementia. So start them early.

10.

Play board games such as Scrabble and Monopoly.  Not only are you taxing your brain, you're socializing too.  Playing solo games, such as solitaire or online computer brain games can be helpful, but Nussbaum prefers games that encourage you to socialize too.

11.

Take classes throughout your lifetime.  Learning produces structural and chemical changes in the brain, and education appears to help people live longer.  Brain researchers have found that people with advanced degrees live longer - and if they do have Alzheimer's, it often becomes apparent only in the very later stages of the disease.

12.

Listen to classical music.  A growing volume of research suggests that music may hard wire the brain, building links between the two hemispheres. Any kind of music may work, but there's some research that shows positive effects for classical music, though researchers don't understand why.

13.

Learn a musical instrument. It may be harder than it was when you were a kid, but you'll be developing a dormant part of your brain.

14.

Travel. When you travel (whether it's to a distant vacation spot or on a different route across town), you're forcing your brain to navigate a new and complex environment.  A study of London taxi drivers found experienced drivers had larger brains because they have to store lots of information about locations and how to navigate there.

15.

Pray. Daily prayer appears to help your immune system.  And people who attend a formal worship service regularly live longer and report happier, healthier lives.

{16}

Learn to meditate.  It's important for your brain that you learn to shut out the stresses of everyday life.

17.

Get enough sleep. Studies have shown a link between interrupted sleep and dementia.

18.

Eat more foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids: Salmon, sardines, tuna, ocean trout, mackerel or herring, plus walnuts (which are higher in omega 3s than salmon) and flaxseed. Flaxseed oil, cod liver oil and walnut oil are good sources too.

{19}

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables mop up some of the damage caused by free radicals, one of the leading killers of brain cells.

20.

Eat at least one meal a day with family and friends.  You'll slow down, socialize, and research shows you'll eat healthier food than if you ate alone or on the go.

DOING ALL 20 THINGS LISTED ABOVE AND YOU WILL NOT FIND ENOUGH TIME IN YOUR LIFE TO DEMENTIA AS WELL: IN OTHER WORDS, "CONTINUE TO DO ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU ALREADY DO AND YOU WILL HAVE COVERED MOST OF THE THINGS LISTED!"

ANTIGEN - ANTIBODY REACTION

<!-- .hmmessage P
{

padding:0px
}
body.hmmessage
{
font-size: 10pt;
font-family:Tahoma
}

BASIC PRINCIPLE OF SERO-IMMUNOLOGY

ANTIGEN-ANTIBODY REACTION

Blood sample in a medical vial

Serology is primarily concerned with antigen-antibody reactions in vitro as they apply to the diagnosis of disease.  All the tests done in serology involve the principle of antigen-antibody reactions.

Antigen is a complex chemical substance found in disease producing agents.  It has been used in two senses, first when introduced into the body will cause the production of antibodies, and second, to denote a substance which reacts in an observable or visible way with antibodies.  There are a number of substances which although they react with antibodies have not been shown to produce antibodies when injected into animals.  A substance is not said to be antigenic unless it will cause the production of antibodies.

Conditions of antigenicity:

  1. Antigen must be foreign to the circulation of the animal's body.

  2. Antigen must have a minimal degree of complexity and a certain molecular size (generally 10,000 or higher).

  3. Entrance of antigen into the animal body by surface injury or natural openings.

  4. Specificity of the antigen.

  5. Rigid structure of the determinant group.

An antigen has two distinct parts: the greater part which is composed of the carrier portion and is protein in nature and the other one is the determinant group or haptene.  It is usually non-protein and made up of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and simple inorganic radicals.  As a whole, most antigens are pure proteins, although some have lipoprotein or carbohydrate protein complexes.  Example is the pneumococcus capsule, composed of a pure polysaccharide, which functions as an effective antigen.

An antibody is a substance, globulin in nature, which is produced by the body and capable of reacting with antigen in some visible way.  One way of detecting antibodies is by their power of neutralizing infectious agents (may be bacterial, viral, rickettsial) or rendering them susceptible to destruction.  Formation of antibodies takes place in the reticulo-endothelial system - bone marrow, spleen, liver, and lymph tissue.  Antibodies have been observed to cause swelling of capsules of microorganisms against which they are directed - to cause lysis, to cause agglutination, to cause the formation of precipitate when mixed with soluble antigen, to phagocytize microorganisms, to neutralize toxic products of bacteria (or other toxins) and to sensitize animals passively to various antigens.  The chemical and physical properties of antibodies are the same with that of normal serum globulin, particularly gamma globulin.  Antibodies have a molecular weight of 150,000 to 200,000.  They are usually found in blood or lymph and also the cerebrospinal fluid.  The ability to form antibodies is influence by the following factors -- genetic constitution, age, sex and hormonal status.  While exact mechanism of production of so-called normal antibodies is still unknown, they may be due to:

  1. Ingestion and absorption of undenatured antigens (in foods) related antigenically to those occuring in infectious agent.

  2. Absorption of related antigens in the air from respiratory tracts.

  3. Absorption of infectious agents themselves or closely related agents.

  4. Production of antibodies by active immuninization or sub-clinical infections in which case they are actually acquired.

Two conditions are usually found in antigen-antibody reactions: cross reactivity and zonal reactions.  Antigens have a high order of specificity, in which they stimulate the body tissues to produce antibodies which will react to them alone and with no other antigen.  However, it sometimes occurs that different disease-producing agents have the same antigen and this incites the production of similar antibody.  This leads to false positive reaction in serological test.  Another thing, a single organism contains a variety of antigenic substances and is therefore capable of producing different antibodies -- this leads also to false positive reaction.

There are other things which produce false negative results, that is, whenever there is an excess antibody and small amount antigen and this leads to a visible reaction called "Prozone reaction." Likewise, when there is an excess antigen and small quantity of antibody, a phenomenon called "Post zone reaction" occurs.

Hi, SkyG!

What a mess! Vicky (not Veronica) had the same problem with basement flooding.  She told me that she never had flooding before and it was the first time that it happened.  I guess there will be cracks in the foundation when a house gets old.  The water drainage systems could not contain the flood and sewage also.  Mila's car had to be repaired at an amazing cost of $9,000 (car insurance will pay) because of  hails the size of tennis balls bombarded her car last day of June or first day of July (?).

Yep, the birthday route to 66 is just around the corner.  Sure, the three of us are going to celebrate with you.  We found this very popular seafood restaurant but one time we went there the place was full and there was a long line.  It's reasonably cheap and the ambience is quite good.  Have you eaten here?

Hi, SkyG!

Okedoke.  Ya, it was mentioned by Tina that you were on your way to the Philippines.  Nakabalik ka na pala.  Ang bilis.  So, no one took the FedEx envelope after all except you. LOL.  I know how busy you are and frankly, I don't know how you guys do it.  [The folks in the Philippines gave some gifts for me to give to my big bro and sis-in-law in Texas when I was there in February -- it was only last week that I had the time to mail the package.  The folks were probably wondering na wala man TY sila big bro.  Hey, if you want something done or some request don't ask the Goddess of Convenience].

I was in a rush that day and no time to have a short chat with you because Mila was driving and we just came from a housewarming party from the far suburb.  Those mousepads are personal gifts from me to you, Margie and Lydia (assuming nagkikita pa kayo kahit saan) and not for fundraising because I don't think no one would be interested in having them because of our photos even though they are all beautiful. Forget the 30 bucks.  Ruby e-mailed me that she got the MHS mousepad, a different one and no photos of her batchmates, and is going to bring it to her office.

Thanks for the invite Te but I'd rather save my money for my trip to Chile, Argentina and Brazil next year.  However, I had a hard time saving this year because of home improvement and maintenance and other miscellaneous expenses:

  • New dryer.......................................  $600

  • Electrician.......................................  $675

  • Hydro jet for clog laundry sink...........  $475

  • Deck Power washing/stains................ $800

  • 4 Philippine relatives request for (free)
gift of money, hindi utang............................  $3,500   Ha-ha-ha!  Binigay ko kasi I have not seen them for 35 years.  While when I attend birthday or wedding parties here in the States I give $400 (shower and wedding) as gifts to the celebrants.  It seems like that every year.

It's good to know Edwin is feeling good and healthy.  Have a wonderful time in your Mediterranean cruise with batchmates and friends.

Miss Wah!  i just found your envelope that you left to whoever by my door in my house.  i think that was jd's bday celeb  on the 23rd of july!  i just came back from pinas last night and was cleaning up all over the house and found a fedex or usmail white envelope and it was from you, top of my dresser table in my bedroom. of course, it was covered by my many papers, etc.  and when i cleaned up, voila there it is!  i even showed the mouse pads to edwin and said, look at these things, b ut why are there three pieces, who do i give the others to?  i was going to email you or call you tomorrow, pero naunahan mo na ako!  thanks  very much.  i think it was a fundraiser that i did not contribute to, so let me do it and i will also tell margie to give.  i think it was $30 right, cuz i saved the email.  i will see margie's daughter tomorrow and i can give it to her.
so how have you been GF, miss na kita.  wala tayong get-together and it is way over half of the year already!  no picnic, no church, ano ba yan!  sayang that you are not going to pinas again or take the cruise.  would you like to come to pinas with me on the pass?  it will costs you only $700 RT standby.  if we plan it right, we can make it.  think about it, i will take care of your lodging and board. and take you anywhere they want us to be!  it will be fun and not too much money.  think about it ok.  Ed and i are going to join them on the cruise to the mediterranean.  i'd been to most of the ports of call but am going for the company.  anyways, it was good to hear from you and thank you very much for everything you have done for me and more.  hoping to see you soon before simbang gabi comes along!

Hi, SkyGoddess & Tina!

Yeah, that's true all over in Europe and everywhere.  Sa Pilipinas lang yata pwedeng umistambay sa megamall at kahit saan.  LOL!  I guess Te you did not get the 3 gifts of MHS mousepads (extra from my creative photos) for you, Margie and Lydia that I had put in your front door last July 23.  Since you did not mention it that you got them, then someone might have taken the envelope.  I mailed one mousepad to Ruby because she was so kind to send me UST T-shirt and a magazine celebrating the 400th anniversary of my school.

Wherever you are, there you are.

Safe travels always.

Tina, Lib's info about sitting by the tables infront of restaurants in venice or anywhere else in europe means you are going to order something is correct.  not only in venice GF but anywhere in europe inside or outside any restaurants.  they don't consider resting b y the table standard.  it means you are going to order.  one more thing, if you buy something inside the restaurant and eat it on the table, hindi rin puede cuz barside is cheaper and table service is more  money about 50 cents more euros!  so let us not make that mistake ever as they don't look at that mistake kindly!

Hi, Tina!

You're just counting the days and waiting.  I was in Venice in 1998 just for two days and it was very memorable for me -- I was waiting for my tour group at the wrong place and almost left behind for the gondola ride; I found out you're not allowed to seat in one of the many tables in front of the restaurant cafe unless you order something.  I've only seen this once in a travel brochure, very rare but maybe not to others - a photo of a very large cruise ship docked in the port of Venice.  I've always wanted to snap that kind of picture for my album but I think there were no cruise ship touring that day.  So, just in case, no doubt you're going to take a photo of you, cruisemates and your cruise ship in Venice.  Take one for me and that will be a spectacular picture! Thanks for sharing.

Happy cruising!
